The Shanghai Composite reaches 3,735.37 by November 20, 2026 in the base case, 3,864.118 in the bull case and 3,547.162 in the bear case. The base case retests the October 20 close if the next Loan Prime Rate fixing leaves the one-year rate at 3.0% and the over-five-year rate at 3.5%.

That October 20 close sits 2.299% above the latest print, on the session when the People's Bank of China (PBOC) published the unchanged pair. The Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) quotation for 000001 showed a last price of 3,651.4337 at 15:23:04 on October 29, 2026, down 30.0354 points, or 0.82%, from a previous close of 3,681.4691, and the daily bar closed at the same print. The test is the October 23 low, the August 4, 2025 low and the rule that sets the next fixing.

Key levels for the Shanghai Composite, each tied to an exchange print or a central-bank fixing, are set out below.

• Shanghai Composite: 3,651.4337 — SSE 000001 last at 15:23:04 on October 29, 2026
• Base case target: 3,735.37 by November 20, 2026 — October 20, 2026 close

• Invalidation level: a daily close below 3,574.271

How the prints and the fixing rule were read

Price levels are SSE daily bars for 000001, labelled 上证指数, plus the snapshot at 15:23:04 on October 29, 2026. Bars run from March 10, 2025 through October 29, 2026. Dates come from the PBOC Loan Prime Rate page: banks quote before 9:00 a.m. on the 20th of every month, postponed for a holiday, and the National Interbank Funding Center publishes at 9:00 a.m. the same day. The latest listing is October 20, 2026, so the next 20th is Friday, November 20, 2026. The page lists a June 22, 2026 release after a Saturday 20th, and a February 24, 2026 release after a Friday 20th.

Where the October 29 close sits in the range

The Shanghai Composite is the SSE index coded 000001 and labelled 上证指数 on the exchange quotation. On October 29, 2026 the last price was 3,651.4337 at 15:23:04, against a previous close of 3,681.4691, a fall of 30.0354 points, or 0.82%, with a daily open of 3,676.7731, a high of 3,678.4584 and a low of 3,645.2603. That close sits 2.247% under the October 20, 2026 close of 3,735.37, the session on which the PBOC published a one-year Loan Prime Rate (LPR) of 3.0% and an over-five-year rate of 3.5%, the same pair as on September 20, 2026. It also sits 7.997% under the December 31, 2025 close of 3,968.84 and 2.159% above the October 23, 2026 session low of 3,574.271. The base case treats 3,735.37 as a prior close to retest, 2.299% above the October 29 print, a level the exchange has already printed on this swing.

Why an unchanged LPR points back to 3,735.37

An unchanged Loan Prime Rate is what makes 3,735.37 the base case for the Shanghai Composite. On October 20, 2026 the PBOC, through the National Interbank Funding Center, left the one-year tenor at 3.0% and the over-five-year tenor at 3.5%, and the index closed at 3,735.37. October 23 printed a low of 3,574.271 and a close of 3,690.475. The base case asks for a return to 3,735.37, a gap of 83.9363 points, by the November 20, 2026 fixing. On October 19, Governor Pan Gongsheng said a shift of the main open-market operation from seven days to overnight would be looked into when appropriate (Bank for International Settlements). The next morning's fixing repeated 3.0% and 3.5%, so the hold case treats 3,735.37 as the cash print that matches an unchanged loan benchmark. The same hold framing is in the TOPIX policy-guideline hold case and the Nifty 50 pause case.

A one-year print below 3.0% on November 20 makes the bull level the October 8, 2026 high of 3,864.118, 5.825% above the October 29 close and under the May 14, 2026 high of 4,258.863. A daily close under 3,574.271 switches the path to the August 4, 2025 low of 3,547.162, 2.856% under the October 29 close. On that bar the open and the low were both 3,547.162 and the close was 3,583.308.

What a prior-close retest leaves out

A prior-close retest can be overrun inside one session, which is the limit of this path for the Shanghai Composite. The October 23, 2026 bar opened at 3,623.566, printed a low of 3,574.271 and closed at 3,690.475, a rise of 116.204 points from low to close, wider than the 83.9363-point gap up to 3,735.37. From the May 14, 2026 high of 4,258.863 to that low the decline is 16.075%, so a return to 3,735.37 repairs only a slice. James Wang's remark allows a repair into year-end portfolio rebuilding. Wang Zhuo's objection is that a price war among chipmakers and suppliers can stop the index at 3,735.37 even with an unchanged LPR, after a fixing that left both tenors where they were. The Hang Seng hold-not-pivot case makes a similar point, and further index work sits on the market news desk.

"Just like all other Chinese manufacturers, (chipmakers and AI suppliers) will eventually end up in a price war."

— Wang Zhuo, partner, Shanghai Zhuozhu Investment Management (Mint, citing Reuters)

What would invalidate the path to 3,735.37

The base case to 3,735.37 by the November 20, 2026 fixing breaks if any one of these four observations lands:

  • A daily close below 3,574.271. That October 23, 2026 low is the lowest 2026 low in these bars, and a close beneath it hands the path to 3,547.162.
  • The November one-year LPR prints above 3.0%, or the over-five-year rate above 3.5%. The base case is a hold of the October 20 and September 20 pair, so a higher fixing tightens the loan benchmark.
  • The November one-year rate prints below 3.0%. That condition switches the destination to the bull case of 3,864.118.
  • The LPR page lists a publication date other than November 20, 2026. The page postpones the 20th for a holiday, and that listing would move the horizon.

What to watch into the next fixing

On November 20, 2026 the two prints that matter are the one-year LPR and the over-five-year LPR, set against 3.0% and 3.5%, published at 9:00 a.m. after quotes are in before 9:00 a.m., or later if the page postpones the 20th. On the cash side, mark a daily close against 3,574.271 and a print of 3,735.37. The October 29 low of 3,645.2603 has already traded inside that band. Turnover on the October 29 bar was 715,620,694,906 yuan, with volume of 443,564,144. A new LPR-page date other than November 20, 2026 replaces the horizon before either index level does.

TL;DR

The Shanghai Composite closed at 3,651.4337 on October 29, 2026, down 0.82% on the SSE quotation for 000001. The base case returns to the October 20 close of 3,735.37 by the November 20, 2026 Loan Prime Rate fixing if the one-year rate stays at 3.0% and the over-five-year rate at 3.5%. A cut opens the October 8 high of 3,864.118. A close under 3,574.271 opens the August 4, 2025 low of 3,547.162. The index is 7.997% under the December 31, 2025 close of 3,968.84.

Questions on the fixing and the index

What is the base-case level for the Shanghai Composite?

The base case is 3,735.37, the SSE daily close on October 20, 2026, the session of the latest Loan Prime Rate announcement. From the October 29 close of 3,651.4337 that prior close is 2.299% higher, a gap of 83.9363 points. It is the destination if the next fixing leaves the one-year rate at 3.0% and the over-five-year rate at 3.5%. A daily close under the October 23 low of 3,574.271 ends that path.

When is the next Loan Prime Rate decision?

The PBOC Loan Prime Rate page states that banks submit quotes before 9:00 a.m. on the 20th of every month, postponed for a holiday, and that the rate is published at 9:00 a.m. the same day. The latest announcement listed is October 20, 2026. The next 20th is Friday, November 20, 2026. The page already lists June 22, 2026 and February 24, 2026, both after the 20th of those months, so a new holiday listing would replace November 20.

Which close would break the base case?

A daily close below 3,574.271 would break the base case. That is the October 23, 2026 session low, and the lowest low among the 2026 sessions in the bars used here. The October 29 close of 3,651.4337 is still 2.159% above it. Beneath that low the bear case is 3,547.162, the August 4, 2025 low, where the open and the low were the same print and the close was 3,583.308.

What did the October 29 session actually print?

The SSE quotation for 000001 showed a last price of 3,651.4337 at 15:23:04, after the 15:00 cash close, down 30.0354 points, or 0.82%, from a previous close of 3,681.4691. The daily bar matches, with an open of 3,676.7731, a high of 3,678.4584 and a low of 3,645.2603. Turnover was 715,620,694,906 yuan and the volume field was 443,564,144. Invalidation stays at the October 23 low of 3,574.271, below that session low.
