The Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) is the free-float adjusted market-capitalisation benchmark for the Japanese cash market, calculated by JPX Market Innovation and Research from a base of 100 on January 4, 1968. The Japan Exchange Group factsheet dated September 30, 2026 lists 1,636 constituents, a 10 percent weight cap, a largest weight of 4.02 percent in Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, a price-to-earnings ratio of 20.79, a price-to-book ratio of 1.86 and a dividend yield of 1.87 percent. The same sheet records a one-year total return of 33.91 percent and a one-month total return of -0.27 percent. The three megabanks on that sheet, Mitsubishi UFJ at 4.02 percent, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group at 2.58 percent and Mizuho Financial Group at 2.12 percent, sum to 8.72 percent of TOPIX. Hitachi, Sony Group, Tokyo Electron and Advantest sum to 8.61 percent under Electric Appliances.

"Looking back at the history of technological breakthroughs, AI is likely to significantly affect our lives as a general-purpose technology. Like the steam engine and the internet, AI has the potential to transform industries and drive innovation across the board."

— Uchida Shinichi, deputy governor of the Bank of Japan (Bank of Japan, October 5, 2026)

Why a hold at 1.25 percent maps to a 4,000 close

September 18 separates further rises from the date of the next one. The SGD/JPY path into the same October outlook is the currency side of that week.

A hold at 1.25 percent maps to a TOPIX close of 4,000 by October 30, 2026 because the cash index finished October 26 only 27.02 points, or 0.68 percent, below that round number. Japan Exchange Group's file prints 3,972.98 for that session, with a high of 3,997.11, and the October 22 close was 3,997.50. The September 18 guideline, effective September 24, 2026, sets the uncollateralized overnight call rate at around 1.25 percent, up from around 1.0 percent. The statement says the Bank will consider the timing and pace of any further rise. The base case treats the October 29-30 meeting as one pause. The bull case is a retest of the October 22 high at 4,073.13 if that pause arrives with a Bank's View in line with July. The bear case is the October 23 session low of 3,907.33.

Asada Toichiro and Sato Ayano voted against the September rise. Asada wanted the guideline unchanged while the consumer price index excluding fresh food sat below 2 percent, and Sato judged that activity and prices had yet to accelerate enough. The yen call built on that dissent split reads the same vote from the currency side.

What the cap-weight and the October reconstitution leave out

On the September 30 factsheet the top ten names are 24.10 percent of TOPIX, and the largest weight, 4.02 percent, sits inside the 10 percent cap. The October 7 review, effective October 30, lists 35 additions, 683 transitional issues and 1,669 constituents, against 1,636 names on that factsheet. Those counts are different dates, and 35 additions do not by themselves equal a net change of 33 names. The sheet's three-year window shows a 23.96 percent maximum drawdown from July 11, 2024 to August 5, 2024. The Swiss Market Index hold case pairs a nearby level with a central-bank hold.

"Given that there have been considerable upside risks to prices in addition to continued accommodative financial conditions, the Bank should not become overly cautious about raising the policy interest rate."

— Koeda Junko, member of the Policy Board, Bank of Japan (Bank of Japan, October 15, 2026)

What would invalidate this call

The base case of 4,000 by October 30 breaks if any one of these four prints arrives.

  • The October 30 guideline is set above 1.25 percent. A further rise removes the pause behind the 27.02-point gap and shifts the working level to 3,907.33.
  • A TOPIX daily close below 3,907.33. That October 23 session low is the swing low under the 4,000 handle.
  • A TOPIX-17 Banks daily close below 434.86. That October 26 low sits in the sleeve with the three largest bank weights.
  • A TOPIX Ex-Financials daily close below 3,224.04. That October 26 low is a fresh low in the non-bank book.

What to watch through the October 30 releases

The Bank's View lands on October 30, when the constituent list takes effect, after the meeting on October 29 and 30. A guideline still around 1.25 percent keeps 4,000 as the base case. A higher guideline moves the working level to 3,907.33. Resistance is 3,997.11 and the bull case is 4,073.13. The Summary of Opinions is due on November 10 and the minutes on December 23. The tape check is TOPIX-17 Banks at 434.86 and Electric Appliances at 7,873.68.

TL;DR

TOPIX printed 3,972.98 on October 26, 2026, up 7.17 points, on the Japan Exchange Group file stamped 16:07 JST, after a drop of 94.50 points, or 2.32 percent, from the October 19 close of 4,067.48. The base case is 4,000 by October 30, the bull case is 4,073.13 and the bear case is 3,907.33. Banks rose 0.20 percent and Electric Appliances closed on its low, down 1.35 percent. A guideline above 1.25 percent, or a daily close below 3,907.33, ends the base case.

FAQ

What is TOPIX?

TOPIX, the Tokyo Stock Price Index, is the free-float adjusted market-capitalisation index from JPX Market Innovation and Research. The September 30, 2026 factsheet lists 1,636 constituents, a base of 100 on January 4, 1968, a 10 percent weight cap and a largest weight of 4.02 percent. It shows a price-to-earnings ratio of 20.79 and a one-year total return of 33.91 percent.

What level does the base case use, and by when?

The base case is a TOPIX level of 4,000 by October 30, 2026, 27.02 points or 0.68 percent above the October 26 print of 3,972.98. The bull case is 4,073.13, the October 22 high, and the bear case is 3,907.33, the October 23 low. October 30 is the Bank's View and the day the October 7 constituent list takes effect.

Which Bank of Japan decision is the level tied to?

The level follows the Monetary Policy Meeting on October 29 and 30, 2026. On September 18 the Policy Board, by a seven-to-two vote, set the uncollateralized overnight call rate at around 1.25 percent from September 24, up from around 1.0 percent. The base case is an unchanged 1.25 percent guideline at that meeting. A higher guideline is the first break.

What market print would break the base case?

A TOPIX daily close below 3,907.33 would break the base case. That price is the October 23 session low and the invalidation on the path to 4,000. A TOPIX-17 Banks close below 434.86, or a TOPIX Ex-Financials close below 3,224.04, would break it as well. A guideline above 1.25 percent on October 30 is enough on its own.
