LME lead reaches $1,891 a tonne by January 15, 2027 in the base case, $1,909 in the bull case and $1,797 in the bear case. The base case meets the three-month price as stocks fall from the July 15 peak.
The October 16, 2026 cash settlement was $1,854 a tonne and the three-month price was $1,891, on the Westmetall table of London Metal Exchange (LME) reference prices. Reported stock was 339,275 tonnes, against 456,575 tonnes on July 15. That Friday maps, on the exchange prompt checker, to a three-month prompt of January 15, 2027. Cash is $186 below the January 15, 2026 settlement of $2,040.

How the January 15 prompt and the October 16 print were read
Prices are the Westmetall daily table of LME lead cash, the three-month and reported stock through October 16, 2026, read on October 17. Westmetall reprints LME reference prices. Monthly means are the averages page. October's cash average of $1,844.21 is the 12 sessions to date, not a full month. Contango here is the three-month settlement minus cash.
The horizon is the LME prompt checker. In the October 2026 to September 2027 workbook, created on September 30, 2026, the October 16 business date has a cash prompt of October 20 and a three-month prompt of January 15, 2027. The checker page lists the edition. On October 17 the spreadsheet path served an older file ending in August 2025, so this date is the September 30 edition. Balances are the International Lead and Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) release of August 26 and a Reuters dispatch of April 23.
What cash, the contango and the stock line show
The LME lead cash settlement is the official cash price reprinted by Westmetall, and on October 16, 2026 that price was $1,854 a tonne. The same row prints a three-month price of $1,891, a contango of $37, and reported stock of 339,275 tonnes. Stock is down 117,300 tonnes from 456,575 on July 15, and cash is up $57 from that day's $1,797. The gap was $46 on July 15 and $26.50 on September 22, when cash was $1,909. From September 16 to October 16 stock fell from 378,350 tonnes to 339,275, or 10.3%. October's cash average is $1,844.21 across 12 sessions. September's monthly cash average was $1,871.07. January's monthly cash average was $1,998.26. The January 15, 2026 row was a $42 contango, cash $2,040 against a three-month price of $2,082, with stock at 211,400 tonnes.
| Session | Cash ($/t) | Three-month ($/t) | Contango ($/t) | Reported stock (t) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

The July peak was a jump. Stock rose from 289,375 tonnes on July 13 to 456,575 on July 15, up 167,200 tonnes, or 57.8%. Home's column put the Singapore warranting at 171,175 metric tons. The gap is 3,975 tonnes.

Why $1,891 is the base case into that prompt
The base case for LME lead is $1,891 a tonne on January 15, 2027, the three-month settlement printed on October 16, not the January 15, 2026 high of $2,040. The date is the LME checker's three-month prompt for that Friday. Cash at $1,854 must rise $37, or 2.0% of that settlement, against a stock decline of 117,300 tonnes from 456,575 on July 15. The bull case stops at $1,909, the September 22 high since that peak. The bear case is $1,797, that Wednesday's cash print, if stock turns back towards 456,575 tonnes. The World Bank's April 2026 table puts lead at $1,950 in both 2026 and 2027, after $1,962 in 2025. Friday's cash is $96 under that mean, and $1,891 is still $59 short of it. The forecast table is a yearly benchmark. Reaching it is not this call.
Home tied a recovery to China diverting Indian metal from Singapore, citing World Bureau of Metal Statistics figures: Indian refined exports of 482,000 tons in 2025 and 57,000 tons shipped to China in the first five months of 2026. The August 26 ILZSG release put the first-half surplus at 49,000 tonnes, with usage down 0.6%, after an April Reuters dispatch had forecast 109,000 tonnes for 2026. If that surplus returns to warrant, $1,797 matters more than $1,891.
What a warehouse-churn reading leaves out
Home's 171,175 metric tons and 58% jump are the column's figures. Westmetall shows 167,200 tonnes, or 57.8%, from July 13 to July 15, and a three-month settlement of $1,843 against his 15-month low of $1,840. The 142,598 tons he said were still warrantable after Monday's first tranche were a July observation, not an October stock. The February 10 contango was $55.50 at cash $1,910.50.
May's monthly average cash price was $1,991.03 against a three-month average of $1,989.53, a $1.50 backwardation. A draw can be cancellations rather than battery use. See the cotton warehouse-stock note and the EU carbon surplus-floor note.
"The lead market is also clearly over-supplied judging by the elevated stocks held in LME warehouses and is the only metal that analysts have marked down since the last poll in October."

What would invalidate this call
The base case to $1,891 on January 15, 2027 breaks if any one of these four signals fires. Each is a settlement or a stock print:
- A cash settlement below $1,827. That October 2 print is the low of the 12 October sessions. A later print under it gives up that October range and points towards $1,797. The base case retires there, not at the bear case.
- Reported stock back above 404,675 tonnes. That is the September 1 reading. Crossing it gives back the autumn draw and fits a fresh warranting wave.
- A settlement-day contango wider than $46. October 16 is $37. July 15, the stock-peak session, was $46. A later gap wider than that $46 means the forward is not pulling cash up to $1,891.
- A three-month settlement below $1,854 before January 15, 2027. If the forward is marked under today's cash, the claim that cash will meet $1,891 no longer describes the curve.
What to watch into the January prompt
The cash prompt for October 16 is Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The call date stays January 15, 2027. Each London session, test cash against $1,854, $1,827 and $1,909, and the three-month price against $1,891. Test reported stock levels against 339,275 and 404,675 tonnes. The next ILZSG bulletin is where the 49,000-tonne first-half surplus is confirmed or revised. No bulletin date is used here, because the August 26 release does not print one. A cash print above $1,909 would hit the bull case early and would not move the base case. Other calls on the Market News desk are different instruments.
TL;DR
LME lead cash reaches $1,891 a tonne by January 15, 2027 in the base case, $1,909 in the bull case and $1,797 in the bear case. The October 16 settlement was $1,854, with reported stock of 339,275 tonnes, down 117,300 tonnes from 456,575 on July 15, on the Westmetall table. The call needs the draw to hold and the $37 contango to close. It breaks on a cash settlement below $1,827. The World Bank mean of $1,950 is an annual benchmark, not this prompt.
FAQ
What is the LME lead base case?
The base case is LME lead cash at $1,891 a tonne by January 15, 2027. That is the three-month settlement on October 16, 2026, when cash was $1,854 and reported stock was 339,275 tonnes on the Westmetall table. The bull case is $1,909 and the bear case is $1,797. The gap from cash is $37.
Why is the horizon January 15, 2027?
January 15, 2027 is the three-month prompt the LME checker gives the October 16, 2026 business date. The cash prompt on that row is October 20, 2026. The workbook runs from October 2026 to September 2027 and was created on September 30, 2026. A download on October 17 returned an older file ending in August 2025, so the horizon is the September 30 edition.
How far have reported LME lead stocks fallen?
Westmetall shows reported stock of 456,575 tonnes on July 15, 2026 and 339,275 tonnes on October 16, a fall of 117,300 tonnes. From September 16 the line fell from 378,350 tonnes, or 10.3%. July 13 to July 15 rose 167,200 tonnes. Home's warranting figure was 171,175 metric tons, 3,975 tonnes apart.
What settles this call as wrong?
A cash settlement below $1,827 retires the base case. That is the October 2 low on the Westmetall table. Past that print the bear case is the July 15 low of $1,797. The call also fails if stock rises through 404,675 tonnes, the September 1 reading, or if a settlement-day contango widens beyond $46. A three-month price below $1,854 before January 15, 2027 would mark the forward under today's cash.
Is $1,891 the World Bank lead forecast?
No. The World Bank's April 2026 commodity table puts lead at $1,950 a tonne in 2026 and in 2027, after $1,962 in 2025. October 16 cash of $1,854 is $96 under the 2026 mean. The base case of $1,891 is still $59 under it. That figure is an annual average. This call scores the October 16 three-month settlement on the January 15, 2027 prompt.
