LME tin to $51,000 by the January 15, 2027 prompt date
LME tin cash settled at $50,100 on October 15, 2026. The base case is $51,000 by the January 15, 2027 prompt. A cash settlement below $49,550 breaks the call.

LME tin reaches $51,000 a tonne by January 15, 2027 in the base case, $54,400 in the bull case and $48,000 in the bear case. The base case is a partial retracement of the October sell-off into the three-month prompt, not a new high.
The October 15, 2026 cash settlement was $50,100 a tonne and the three-month price was $50,000, on the Westmetall table of London Metal Exchange (LME) reference prices read on October 16. That Thursday maps, on the exchange prompt checker, to a three-month prompt of January 15, 2027. Cash had been $54,400 on October 1, a fall of $4,300 a tonne, while stock was 4,205 tonnes against 9,025 tonnes on June 17. The call breaks if any one of four prints fires.
Key Levels:
• LME tin: cash $50,100 on October 15, 2026; three-month $50,000; stock 4,205 tonnes — Westmetall, October 16, 2026
• Base case target: $51,000 by January 15, 2027 — checker prompt; top of that day's band
• Bull case target: $54,400 — October 1 cash settlement, if Man Maw shipments stall
• Bear case target: $48,000 — floor of the October 15 band
• Major support: $49,550 — June 24, 2026 cash settlement
• Major resistance: $51,100 — October 14, 2026 cash settlement
• Invalidation level: official cash below $49,550; an intraday last does not qualify
How the January 15 prompt and the settlement were read
The price file is the Westmetall table of LME tin cash, three-month and stock through October 15, 2026. Westmetall reprints LME reference prices; it is not the exchange screen. The LME tin page returned no official-price rows. The horizon is the spreadsheet on the prompt checker for October 2026 to September 2027: Thursday, October 15 has a cash prompt of October 19 and a three-month prompt of January 15, 2027. Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) supplies the band edges. The $51,250 last is intraday, and the World Bank figure is an annual mean.
What the October tin tape actually printed
The Westmetall table for that Thursday shows an LME tin cash settlement of $50,100 a tonne, a three-month price of $50,000 a tonne and stock of 4,205 tonnes. The base case is $51,000 a tonne on that prompt, the top of the $48,000 to $51,000 band Shanghai Metals Market published on October 15, 2026, and the same $51,000 average BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, set for 2026 on September 14. This is a prompt price, not a rewrite of the year's average, and not the World Bank annual mean.

Cash fell $4,300, from $54,400 on October 1 to $50,100 on October 15. Stock fell from 9,025 tonnes on June 17 to 4,205. October 13, at 4,180 tonnes, is the low. Fastmarkets wrote on October 14 that three-month tin had traded above $50,000 a tonne since June 23. The October 15 three-month price was $50,000.
"AI provides a compelling long-term demand story for tin, but the near-term test is whether that demand translates into stronger physical buying. The crucial distinction on supply is between a mine restarting and reliable metal reaching consumers."

Why $51,000 is the base case into that prompt
An official cash settlement is not the same object as an intraday last. The Westmetall table, read on October 16, 2026, still ended on October 15, when LME tin cash settled at $50,100 a tonne and the three-month price was $50,000. Shanghai Metals Market's midday note that morning quoted an LME three-month last of $51,250 a tonne, up $835, and said the market was reclaiming the $51,000 level. That last shows the round number trading in Asian hours. It does not replace the official settlement, which the exchange establishes later on the London second Ring. This note keeps $50,100 as the spot and $51,000 as the level judged on January 15, 2027. A last above the target does not complete the call. A last under the June 24, 2026 cash settlement of $49,550 does not invalidate it. Invalidation is a later official cash settlement below that June print.
Cash settled at $51,100 on October 14, the October 15 band topped at $51,000, and BMI's September 14 revision set a 2026 average of $51,000 a tonne, up from $49,000. The bull case, $54,400, is the October 1 settlement if Man Maw does not deliver reliable metal, the test Deng set. The bear case, $48,000, is the floor of the October 15 SMM band.
The case against $51,000 is SMM's October 16 note, which called the rebound a macro recovery and said LME tin would consolidate around $50,000. Notes on the market-news desk, including the silver real-yield case and the cotton stocks case, keep their own invalidation rules.
What an annual-average model misses
Table 1 of the World Bank's April 2026 Commodity Markets Outlook forecasts tin at $30,066 a tonne in 2024, $34,059 in 2025, $41,000 for 2026 and $37,000 for 2027. October 15 cash was $50,100, and BMI's year-to-date average as at September 2 was $51,385. The forecast table is a yearly benchmark, not the January prompt.
On June 24 cash settled at $49,550, one session after $51,900, while the three-month price held $50,100. The high cash print on the 2026 rows is $57,525 on June 2, so $54,400 is not that peak. BMI's figure of about $54,633 on September 2 is not the Westmetall print of $54,300. The August stock-drawdown case took a higher year-end path. This note does not reuse it.
"a steady but uneven ramp-up"
— Richard Horsey, Senior Asia Advisor, International Crisis Group (AFP, via Macau Business, September 10, 2026)
AFP reported ore moving again at Man Maw, output still well below pre-suspension levels, and first-half imports from Myanmar of nearly 40,000 metric tonnes, already above all of 2025. That fits $51,000, not a return to the October 1 settlement.
What would invalidate this call
The base case of $51,000 by January 15, 2027 breaks if any one of these four signals fires.
- An official cash settlement below $49,550 a tonne. That June 24, 2026 print is the lowest cash settlement on the 2026 table after May 1, when cash was $49,200. SMM's intraday low of $49,685 does not count.
- LME tin stock back above 9,025 tonnes. That June 17 reading is the high of the 2026 rows. The draw to 4,205 tonnes on October 15 is the inventory leg. A full refill ends it.
- An official three-month price below $48,000 a tonne. That is the floor of the band SMM published on October 15, so the bear case would be the path taken.
- Cash $200 or more below the three-month price. June 23 showed a $200 contango. October 15 was a $100 backwardation. A wider contango would say nearby metal has loosened.
What to watch into the January prompt
The near date is the cash prompt for October 15: Monday, October 19, 2026, and whether official cash stays above $49,550. Fastmarkets dated LME Week from that Monday. The LME tin page does not print the Monday, so that gathering date is Fastmarkets' line. The cash prompt is the checker's.
Then watch stock against 4,180 tonnes and against 9,025. A further draw keeps $54,400 alive if Man Maw lags. A rebuild towards the June high promotes $48,000. The judgement date is January 15, 2027. The October 16 last of $51,250 does not score the call.
TL;DR
LME tin cash settled at $50,100 a tonne on October 15, 2026, with the three-month price at $50,000 and stock at 4,205 tonnes, on the Westmetall table. The LME prompt checker maps that session to January 15, 2027. The base case is $51,000, the bull case is $54,400 and the bear case is $48,000. BMI's year-to-date average was $51,385 a tonne as at September 2, 2026. The call breaks on a cash settlement below the June 24 print of $49,550.
FAQ
What spot does this LME tin call use?
The spot is the LME tin cash settlement of $50,100 a tonne on October 15, 2026, on the Westmetall table read on October 16. The same row shows a three-month price of $50,000 and stock of 4,205 tonnes. The LME page had no official-price row. SMM's $51,250 last that morning is intraday, not this cash price.
Why is the horizon January 15, 2027?
January 15, 2027 is the three-month prompt the LME checker assigns to the October 15, 2026 business date. The cash prompt that Thursday is October 19, 2026. The spreadsheet covers October 2026 to September 2027. It is the prompt on the $50,000 three-month price, not a month-end guess and not LME Week.
What would invalidate the $51,000 call?
An official cash settlement below $49,550 a tonne would invalidate it. That June 24, 2026 print is the lowest cash settlement on the 2026 table after May 1. Stock above 9,025 tonnes, a three-month price below $48,000, or cash $200 or more under the three-month price would each break it. An intraday low does not count.
How does the World Bank tin forecast differ?
Table 1 of the April 2026 Commodity Markets Outlook puts tin at $41,000 a tonne for 2026 and $37,000 for 2027, after $34,059 in 2025. Those are annual means. October 15 cash of $50,100 and BMI's year-to-date average of $51,385, as at September 2, sit above the 2026 mean. This call does not use either Bank figure as a target.
Does an intraday trade at $51,250 complete the call?
No. SMM's October 16 note quoted an LME three-month last of $51,250 a tonne, up $835, before the London second Ring. The call is scored on the January 15, 2027 prompt against official prices. The latest cash settlement here is still $50,100. A last above $51,000 does not finish it.
