LME copper to $14,635 by January 14, 2027: premium fades
LME copper's October 14 settlement was $14,751. The base case is the $14,635 three-month official offer by January 14, 2027, unless cash settles above $14,822.

LME copper reaches $14,635 a tonne by January 14, 2027 in the base case, $14,822 in the bull case and $14,519.57 in the bear case. The base case is the three-month official offer on the London Metal Exchange (LME) for October 14, 2026, and January 14, 2027 is the expiry the exchange prints on that same row.
The cash official settlement that day, the last cash offer in the second Ring, was $14,751 a tonne, so nearby metal sat $116 above the three-month offer. Opening stocks were 229,650 tonnes, with 95,350 tonnes of cancelled warrants. The call is that this cash premium compresses into the January prompt. It breaks if the cash settlement prints above $14,822, the October 12 official settlement.
Key Levels:
• LME copper: cash settlement $14,751 (bid $14,750) — LME official prices, October 14, 2026
• Base case target: $14,635 by January 14, 2027 — three-month official offer; expiry text 14 JAN 2027
• Bull case target: $14,822 — October 12 cash settlement, the high cash offer since September 14
• Bear case target: $14,519.57 — December 2026 closing price on October 14; expiry text 16 DEC 2026
• Major support: $14,630 — October 14 three-month official bid
• Major resistance: $14,822 — October 12 cash official settlement
• Invalidation level: cash official settlement above $14,822 — beyond the October 12 seller's price
How the October 14 official print was taken
Figures are the LME's day-delayed official-price rows for LME copper on October 14, 2026, from the LME Copper trading summary. The LME Official Prices explained page says official prices are the last bid and offer in the second Ring, and that the official settlement is the last cash offer. Its timetable puts that window at 12:20 to 13:25 London time. Official offers were read from September 14 to October 14, 2026, alongside that day's closing prices and opening stocks. Expiry dates are the strings on each row. The seller's spread is the cash offer minus the three-month offer. The $14,578 figure is the October 13 three-month close, not this offer.
Four sessions of cash versus the three-month offer
The cash premium narrowed after October 12, then held.
| Session | Cash offer ($/t) | Three-month offer ($/t) | Seller's spread ($/t) | Three-month expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 9, 2026 | 14,689.00 | 14,570.00 | 119.00 | January 8, 2027 |
| October 12, 2026 | 14,822.00 | 14,657.50 | 164.50 | January 12, 2027 |

The LME copper official settlement is the last cash offer from the second Ring, and on October 14, 2026 that price was $14,751 a tonne. The exchange's own explanation says official prices are the last bid and offer from that session, and that the settlement at which LME futures are settled is the last cash offer. The same day's cash bid was $14,750. The three-month prompt, which the LME dates to January 14, 2027, was bid at $14,630 and offered at $14,635. Nearby metal was therefore $116 a tonne richer than the January offer. Opening stocks that morning were 229,650 tonnes, with 132,650 tonnes of live warrants and 95,350 tonnes cancelled. Cancelled metal was 41.5% of the opening-stock line. Those three stock figures are the LME report for October 14, not a broker's warehouse survey, and they are the physical reason a $116 premium can exist even while the forward offer sits lower.
MINING.COM on October 14 reported cash settlements of $14,822 and, the next session, $14,741. Both match the LME offers, as does the 229,650-tonne stock figure. The seven-session decline is that report. Cash offers from September 14 to October 14 run from $14,044 to $14,822.
"Clearly, this rising premium cannot continue indefinitely, but who among us will step forward to say it’s at the top?"
— John Gross, The Copper Journal (MINING.COM)
Why the January 14 prompt is the base case
The October 14 three-month offer is the prompt the LME dates to January 14, 2027. Cash that day was metal for October 16, 2026. Cancelled warrants of 95,350 tonnes, against 132,650 still live, are why a $116 premium can linger after narrowing by $48.50 from the October 12 gap.
The January 14, 2027 level in this call is the LME's October 14 three-month official offer of $14,635 a tonne, not a bank average and not a converted screen price. The LME dates that prompt to January 14, 2027 on the official-price row whose cash settlement was $14,751. The $116 gap between those two offers is the premium the base case expects to close. It is a convergence call: the cash seller's price meets the offer the Ring has already made for the January prompt. It fails upward if a later cash settlement takes out the October 12 high of $14,822, and it fails as a description of the forward curve if the three-month offer itself is marked above the current cash settlement before the horizon arrives. Readers who want a different metal's inventory arithmetic can start from the tin stock-drawdown note on this site. That piece is not a copper target.
MINING.COM on October 14 has Macquarie at a 2027 average of $12,750, still "very binary" on Section 232, and BMO at $14,675 for 2027. Daniel Ghali of Deutsche Bank is reported telling the Wall Street Journal that copper "simply won’t be available" by the end of 2028.
What the Ring price does not settle
On January 14, 2027 cash will be a prompt about two business days past the expired three-month date, so the test is that session's cash offer against $14,635. The bear case uses a different print. The LME closing price for December 2026 was $14,519.57 on October 14, expiry text 16 DEC 2026, while official offers that day stayed at or above $14,635: December 2027 $14,650, December 2028 $14,695, December 2029 $14,725. A tariff ruling that moves cash and the three-month offer together can erase the $116 premium without hitting $14,635. MINING.COM's note of a preliminary Escondida deal, and a still-shut pit at El Teniente, is not converted into lost tonnes here. See the nickel ore-versus-metal note and the iron-ore guidance note for other supply calls.

What would invalidate this call
The base case, a cash official offer of $14,635 on January 14, 2027, breaks if any one of these four signals prints. Each one says the premium is being rebuilt, or that the forward has been rewritten.
- A cash official settlement above $14,822. That October 12 seller's price is the high cash offer from September 14 to October 14. The bull case is a retest of it. A settlement through it ends the call.
- A seller's spread wider than $164.50. That is the October 12 gap between the cash offer and the three-month offer. A wider later gap means nearby metal is being bid up again.
- Cancelled warrants above 95,350 tonnes and live warrants below 132,650 tonnes on a later LME copper stock report. October 14 is the baseline.
- A three-month official offer above $14,751 before January 14, 2027. That would mark the January prompt through the current cash settlement. The call is that cash meets the offer already printed.
What to watch before January 14
The October 14 cash prompt expires on October 16, 2026. The October monthly expiry is October 21, 2026, and the December prompt is December 16, 2026. The call date remains January 14, 2027. Each London day, official prices are set from 12:20 to 13:25 and stocks at 09:00. Watch the cash offer against $14,751 and $14,822, and the three-month offer against $14,635. MINING.COM, citing Reuters, put CME FedWatch odds of a quarter-point hike at the Federal Reserve's late-October meeting near 44% after the September inflation print. That can move both legs. It is not a second target. Other levels on the Market News desk are separate instruments.
TL;DR
LME copper's base case is $14,635 a tonne by January 14, 2027, the three-month official offer from October 14 and the expiry on that row. The cash settlement was $14,751, a $116 premium versus $164.50 on October 12. Opening stocks were 229,650 tonnes, with 95,350 tonnes cancelled. The bull case is $14,822. The bear case is the December 2026 close at $14,519.57. A later cash settlement above $14,822 invalidates the call. The object is that premium, not a bank's 2027 average.
FAQ
What is the LME copper base case?
The base case is $14,635 a tonne by January 14, 2027. That figure is the LME three-month official offer on October 14, 2026, and the date is the expiry on the row, written as 14 JAN 2027. Cash settled at $14,751 on the same row. The call says cash converges on the January offer. It is not a 2027 average, and it is not a price taken from another exchange.
Which print is the official settlement?
The LME says the official settlement is the last cash offer in the second Ring, and the price at which LME futures are settled. On October 14, 2026 that offer was $14,751, with a bid of $14,750. The three-month market was $14,630 bid and $14,635 offered. The headline uses the three-month offer. The settlement is the spot. Both come from the same official-price row.
What invalidates the call?
A later cash official settlement above $14,822 invalidates it. That is the October 12 cash offer, the high from September 14 to October 14, 2026. A seller's spread wider than $164.50, cancelled warrants above 95,350 tonnes with live warrants below 132,650, or a three-month offer above $14,751 would also break the base case. Any one signal is enough.
How tight were LME copper stocks on October 14?
Opening stocks were 229,650 tonnes. Live warrants were 132,650 tonnes and cancelled warrants were 95,350 tonnes, or 41.5% of the opening line. The rows are used as printed. MINING.COM reported the same 229,650 tonnes after seven declines. The level is the LME figure. The streak is the report. Those cancellations are why a retest of $14,822 remains the bull case.
