The Nikkei 225 reaches 66,200 by October 30, 2026 in the base case, 67,744.29 in the bull case and 60,963.39 in the bear case. It is a partial retracement into the Bank of Japan (BOJ) Outlook, and it breaks on a close under the October 15 low or a higher call rate that day.

CNBC and Yahoo Finance both show a Nikkei 225 last of 64,425.95 at 3:45 p.m. Japan Standard Time on October 15, 2026, down 4.90 per cent from 67,744.29. Yahoo marks the session POSTPOST. The 50-day average on that quote is 66,224.60, so 66,200 sits 24.60 points under it. October 30 is the BOJ date for the Outlook Report's Bank's View.

Key Levels:

• Major support: 64,092.74 — October 15 session low

• Invalidation level: a cash close below 64,092.74

How this Nikkei 225 level was fixed

The spot is the shared last on the CNBC and Yahoo Finance pages for October 15, not a Japan Exchange Group file. CNBC shows 64,425.95 at 2026-10-15T15:45:03+0900, open 66,880.37, high 66,929.30, low 64,092.74 and previous close 67,744.29. Yahoo's ^N225 quote matches those prices, with regularMarketTime 1792046703 and marketState POSTPOST. Averages and returns are that quote's summary detail, asOfDate October 15, 2026. CNBC's 52-week low of 46,544.05 on October 14, 2025 does not match Yahoo's 47,494.31, so the bear case uses only the 200-day average of 60,963.39. Dates are the BOJ MPM calendar. October 30 is not on the JPX holiday list updated February 6, 2026. Morning chip and yield figures are Nikkei Asia's, not the close.

The Nikkei 225 base case of 66,200 by October 30, 2026 is a partial retracement, not a new high. The spot is 64,425.95, the last CNBC and Yahoo Finance both show at 3:45 p.m. Japan Standard Time on October 15, down 3,318.34 points, or 4.90 per cent, from 67,744.29. Yahoo's ^N225 summary detail puts the 50-day average at 66,224.60 and the 200-day average at 60,963.39. The performance overview dated October 15 shows five days at minus 8.01 per cent, one month at plus 1.48 per cent, three months at minus 6.29 per cent and the year to date at plus 27.98 per cent. A close at 66,200 recovers 1,774.05 points, 53.5 per cent of the day's loss, and stays under the session high of 66,929.30. The bull case is 67,744.29. The bear case is 60,963.39, 3,462.56 points under the last. The call fails on a cash close below 64,092.74.

"Tentatively, it appears that the demand side has come first and that it has been making financial conditions more accommodative on balance, while there is a risk of correction, if profits do not follow."

— UCHIDA Shinichi, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan (Bank of Japan, October 5, 2026)

Why 66,200 is the path into the October 30 Outlook

The October 15 drop in the Nikkei 225 fits a global chip shock, not a jump in Japanese yields. Nikkei Asia's Thursday morning report said the index fell over 4 per cent and went under 65,000, with Kioxia down 11.4 per cent and Tokyo Electron down 7.2 per cent, after a September consumer price index (CPI) that beat expectations and accelerated from August. It said the Nasdaq fell 1.8 per cent, the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell over 4 per cent, the US 10-year yield hit 5.33 per cent before easing to around 5.2 per cent, and Japan's 10-year yield fell to 2.95 per cent. Equities fell while the domestic yield eased. Those percentages are morning readings, not the 64,425.95 close. UCHIDA Shinichi had said on October 5 that artificial-intelligence demand had eased financial conditions, with a correction the risk if profits did not follow. A move to 66,200 by October 30 is the base case only if that correction pauses and the Board does not hike.

On September 18, 2026 the Policy Board, seven to two, set the call rate at around 1.25 per cent from September 24, and the basic loan rate at 1.5 per cent. Asada Toichiro and Sato Ayano dissented. Takata Hajime and Tamura Naoki thought inflation was already near the target. That is why 66,200 stops under the 50-day average, and why 67,744.29 is only the bull case if October 30 does not hike. The Hang Seng note into October 28 and the Nasdaq 100 note cover other indices. Their levels are not used here.

What a two-week average cannot settle

A 50-day average is a lagging mean, not a price the Nikkei 225 must touch. Rounding Yahoo's 66,224.60 to 66,200, 24.60 points under that field, keeps the headline a round point rather than a false claim of precision. The September hike cuts both ways. The call rate has been 1.25 per cent since September 24, and the October 14 close was still 67,744.29, so one hike did not mean a lower index. A second hike, into a five-day loss of 8.01 per cent, is a different test. The 200-day figure is a quote-page field, not a line recomputed from a Nikkei Inc. series. KOEDA Junko put the nominal neutral range near 1.1 to 2.5 per cent, and 1.25 per cent sits near the bottom of it. No September CPI index level is stated, because no Bureau of Labor Statistics release was retrieved.

"Given that there have been considerable upside risks to prices in addition to continued accommodative financial conditions, the Bank should not become overly cautious about raising the policy interest rate."

— KOEDA Junko, Member of the Policy Board, Bank of Japan (Bank of Japan, speech in Kumamoto, October 15, 2026)

What would invalidate this call

The base case to 66,200 by October 30 breaks if any one of these four signals fires:

  • A Nikkei 225 cash close below 64,092.74. The October 15 low has to hold, or the repair is over.
  • An October 30 call rate above 1.25 per cent. A further hike, after a five-day loss of 8.01 per cent, removes the hold.
  • A US 10-year yield above 5.33 per cent, Nikkei Asia's New York high, while the Nikkei 225 is still under 66,200. The rates leg of the shock would not have eased.
  • A daily close below 60,963.39. That Yahoo 200-day average would break the long trend in a year still up 27.98 per cent.

What to watch into October 30

The meeting is October 29 and 30. The BOJ calendar puts the Outlook's Bank's View on October 30, a Friday absent from the JPX holiday list. The next holidays are November 3 and November 23. Minutes of the September meeting are due on November 5, after this horizon. Levels that matter are 64,092.74, then 66,200, then 66,929.30, with 67,744.29 only in the bull case. The 10-year Japanese government bond (JGB) was 2.95 per cent in the morning Nikkei Asia reading. The July JGB note is the longer hike case, not today's yield. The ASX 200 note is a different index. Kioxia and Tokyo Electron are the sector check.

TL;DR

The Nikkei 225 base case is 66,200 by October 30, 2026, the BOJ date for the Outlook's Bank's View. Spot is 64,425.95 at 3:45 p.m. JST on October 15, down 4.90 per cent on the CNBC and Yahoo prints. The target is 24.60 points under Yahoo's 50-day average of 66,224.60 and recovers 53.5 per cent of the 3,318.34-point drop. Bull case 67,744.29. Bear case 60,963.39. The call dies on a close below 64,092.74, or if October 30 lifts the 1.25 per cent rate. Year to date was still plus 27.98 per cent on Yahoo's October 15 overview.

FAQ

What is the Nikkei 225 target for October 30, 2026?

The base-case target is 66,200 by October 30, 2026, the same figure as the headline. It is 1,774.05 points, or 2.75 per cent, above the October 15 last of 64,425.95, and 24.60 points under Yahoo's 50-day average of 66,224.60. The bull case is the previous close, 67,744.29. The bear case is the 200-day average, 60,963.39. October 30 is the BOJ Outlook date, not a quarter-end.

Which cash print is the spot?

The spot is 64,425.95 at 3:45 p.m. Japan Standard Time on October 15, 2026. CNBC timestamps it 2026-10-15T15:45:03+0900. Yahoo's ^N225 quote shows the same price, the same timestamp and a POSTPOST state. The previous close is 67,744.29, the change is minus 3,318.34 points, and the range is 64,092.74 to 66,929.30. This is not a JPX settlement file. Those pages did not show a Nikkei 225 cash close.

Why is the horizon October 30 rather than a later quarter?

The BOJ calendar lists a meeting on October 29 and 30, 2026, and the Outlook Report's Bank's View on October 30. That is the next decision after October 15. The following meeting on the page is December 17 and 18. October 30 is not on the JPX holiday list updated February 6, 2026. The next closures are November 3 and November 23. The horizon matches that decision.

What would prove the 66,200 call wrong?

Any one break is enough. A Nikkei 225 cash close below 64,092.74 ends the price leg. An October 30 call rate above 1.25 per cent ends the policy leg. A US 10-year yield above 5.33 per cent, the high Nikkei Asia reported, while the index is still under 66,200, ends the rates leg. A close under 60,963.39, the 200-day average, ends the trend leg.
