The FTSE MIB reaches 49,857.18 by 29 October 2026 in the base case, 50,057.18 in the bull case and 48,354.89 in the bear case. The base case is a return to the 16 October close, not a new high. It uses the 19 October close of 49,086.27 on Borsa Italiana and the European Central Bank (ECB) press conference on 29 October, after two increases of 25 basis points already in the key rates. The call breaks if any one of four signals fires, listed below.
Key Levels:
• Asset: FTSE MIB at 49,086.27 — daily close on 19 October 2026, Borsa Italiana chart series for FTSEMIB.IDX, matching the list-page Chiusura read on 20 October 2026
• Base case target: 49,857.18 by 29 October 2026 — the 16 October 2026 close
• Bull case target: 50,057.18 — the 13 October 2026 close, last settle above 50,000 in that series
• Bear case target: 48,354.89 — the 19 May 2026 close, last print in the six-month series below 49,086.27
• Major support: 48,835.91 — 19 October 2026 session low
• Major resistance: 50,380.69 — 13 October 2026 session high
• Invalidation level: a daily close below 48,835.91 — loss of the 19 October low ends the repair case
Where the levels come from
Prices are daily bars from Borsa Italiana's chart service for FTSEMIB.IDX, read on 20 October 2026, from 20 April. The file repeats the close, so only close, high and low are used. The first value of 49,514.67 is the Primo Valore on the FTSE MIB detail page and the Apertura on the list page, not a close. The real-time last was blank.
Weights are the FTSE Russell factsheet of 30 September 2026. Rates are the 10 September ECB decision. The horizon is the press conference on the ECB Governing Council calendar on 29 October 2026. Detail-page returns of 0.00% are ignored. The year-high field, 53,717.19 on 7 August 2026, matches that day's close, not the session high of 54,041.80.
What the 19 October close actually changed
Borsa Italiana calls the FTSE MIB the benchmark of 40 float-adjusted shares. The last bar, 19 October 2026, closed at 49,086.27 after a high of 49,592.40 and a low of 48,835.91. The 16 October close was 49,857.18. The total-return line, a separate series, shows 135,416.22 and a change of -1.55 that day. The prior close under 49,086.27 in this file was 48,354.89 on 19 May 2026.

The FTSE MIB call repairs the 19 October decline back to the 16 October close of 49,857.18 by the ECB press conference on 29 October 2026. The spot is 49,086.27. The bull case is 50,057.18, the 13 October close and the last settle above 50,000 in that stretch. The bear case is 48,354.89, the 19 May close. FTSE Russell's factsheet dated 30 September 2026 puts the capital-return index at a year-to-date gain of 14.3%, a three-month return of -0.6% and 12-month volatility of 15.7%. Banks were 40.22% of capitalisation that day, across seven names, with utilities at 12.75% and energy at 9.75%. The 20 October first value was 49,514.67, between the two closes. A daily close under 48,835.91 ends the repair. The six-month file's low close, 47,478.13 on 4 May 2026, is not the bear case.

"Euro area banks maintain strong capital and liquidity buffers and robust profitability, together with healthy and stable asset quality."
— Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB, IMFC statement, 17 October 2026)
Why 49,857.18 is the base into 29 October
On 10 September 2026 the Governing Council raised the three key ECB rates by 25 basis points. The decision set the deposit facility at 2.50%, main refinancing at 2.65% and marginal lending at 2.90% from 16 September 2026, and it does not pre-commit to a path. Lagarde's 17 October statement records the same size of increase in June, and says tighter financing conditions will slow growth by more than the September projections.
This is not a case for the 7 August print of 53,717.19. UniCredit was 14.95% and Intesa Sanpaolo 14.32% on 30 September, the two largest lines. The opposing reading is the rise in long-term yields in that same speech, which is also the point of the S&P/TSX note on higher bond yields and of the Russell 2000 note on bank credit.
A return of the FTSE MIB to 49,857.18 by 29 October 2026 repairs one session. It does not claim a new trend. The 19 October close of 49,086.27 sat 770.91 points under the 16 October close of 49,857.18. The first value on Borsa Italiana's pages on 20 October was 49,514.67, or 428.40 points of that gap, and it is not a settle. The bull case of 50,057.18 is only the 13 October close. Banks at 40.22% of capitalisation on 30 September, a deposit facility already at 2.50%, and the press conference on 29 October are the three inputs. If the next step is no larger than the 25 basis points of June and of September, the base case is a revisit of 49,857.18. If long-term yields keep rising as Lagarde described, that same bank weight is why the bear case sits at 48,354.89.
Energy can offset the banks. That supersector was 9.75%, Eni 6.26% and utilities 12.75%, with Enel at 9.32%, all as at 30 September. The base case does not need those shares to fall. The IBEX 35 path into the same press conference is a separate call on this Market News desk.
What this level map leaves out
These are exchange prints, not an earnings model. There is no split of the 19 October drop between banks and the other constituents. Weights are as at 30 September, before the fall from 51,371.98 to 49,086.27, and a weight drifts with price. The Panetta remarks are from 15 July 2026, before the September increase. The chart file had no 20 October bar, so 49,514.67 can still be overtaken by the cash close. The detail-page year-low of 42,840.90 on 20 March 2026 is outside the window and is not a scenario.
"A prolonged period of hostilities, coupled with renewed pressures on energy markets, could lead banks to be more cautious and to tighten their credit standards."
— Fabio Panetta, Governor of Banca d'Italia (Banca d'Italia, ABI annual meeting, 15 July 2026)
What would invalidate this call
The base case to 49,857.18 breaks if any one of these four signals fires:
- A daily close below 48,835.91. That is the 19 October low. Losing it means the repair back to 49,857.18 is no longer the central path. This is the invalidation level.
- The 29 October press conference raises the deposit facility by more than 25 basis points. June and September each used 25 basis points, and the facility is 2.50%. A larger step would reject the measured-size reading. This note does not predict the decision.
- A daily close below 48,354.89 before 29 October. That is the 19 May close and the bear target. Hitting it early finishes the base case.
- A daily close above 50,380.69 before the press conference. That is the 13 October high. A settle through it would mean the bull case of 50,057.18 was too low.
What to watch before the press conference
The ECB lists 28 October 2026 as day one in Frankfurt and 29 October 2026 as day two, with the press conference. The levels beside that date are 49,857.18, the first value of 49,514.67, and the low of 48,835.91. Each new bar on the FTSE MIB summary chart either narrows the 770.91-point gap or reopens it. Lagarde's 17 October statement gives September headline inflation at 3.8% and core at 2.5%, and the September projections put 2026 growth at 0.9% and 2026 headline inflation at 3.0%.
TL;DR
The FTSE MIB base case is 49,857.18 by 29 October 2026, the 16 October close, with a bull case at 50,057.18 and a bear case at 48,354.89. The spot is the Borsa Italiana close of 49,086.27 on 19 October. Banks were 40.22% of the index on the FTSE Russell factsheet dated 30 September 2026, and the deposit facility is 2.50%. It is a one-session repair, not a run at 53,717.19 on 7 August. A daily close below 48,835.91 ends it.
FAQ
What is the FTSE MIB base-case level, and by when?
The base case is 49,857.18 by 29 October 2026, the cash close on 16 October in Borsa Italiana's daily series. The bull case is 50,057.18 and the bear case is 48,354.89. The horizon is the ECB press conference on 29 October 2026. The spot is the 19 October close of 49,086.27, and the call is a one-session retracement.
Where does the 49,086.27 spot come from?
It is the last completed daily close in Borsa Italiana's chart service for FTSEMIB.IDX on 19 October 2026. It matches the Chiusura on the list page read on 20 October. No live tick is used. The total-return close was 135,416.22. The 20 October first value of 49,514.67 is an opening print, not the spot.
Why does the horizon stop on 29 October?
The ECB calendar puts day one of the monetary-policy meeting on 28 October 2026 and the press conference on 29 October 2026. That is the catalyst for an index that was 40.22% banks on 30 September. Nothing in these prints stretches the call to year-end. It is not a year-long view.
How large are banks inside the FTSE MIB?
On the 30 September 2026 factsheet, banks were seven constituents and 40.22% of the index. UniCredit was 14.95% and Intesa Sanpaolo 14.32%. Utilities were 12.75% and energy 9.75%. The dividend yield was 3.87%. Bank net capitalisation on that sheet was €284,089 million. Those weights are not the 19 October close.
