EUR/ZAR to 18.2290 by November 19: the gap still holds
EUR/ZAR reaches 18.2290 by November 19, 2026 if the 475-basis-point SARB-ECB gap holds. A fixing above 18.6489 breaks the call.

EUR/ZAR reaches 18.2290 by November 19, 2026 in the base case, 18.0490 in the bear case and 18.7690 in the bull case. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) rand-per-euro fixing was 18.4303 on October 20, 2026, 4.94% below the 19.3890 print on January 2, 2026, while the policy gap versus the European Central Bank (ECB) deposit facility is still 475 basis points. The call breaks if any one of four signals in the disconfirmation section fires.
Key Levels:
• EUR/ZAR: 18.4303 on the SARB rand-per-euro fixing, October 20, 2026, banks' rates at approximately 10:30 — SARB current market rates
• Base case target: 18.2290 by November 19, 2026 — half the 0.3600 range from October 1 to October 13, set under the year low
• Bull case target: 18.7690 if the fixing retakes the October 1, 2026 high
• Bear case target: 18.0490 if the full 0.3600 range extends below the October 13 low of 18.4090
• Major support: 18.4090 — year-to-date low on the SARB fixing, October 13, 2026
• Major resistance: 18.6489 — mean of the 50 fixings from August 11, 2026 to October 20, 2026
• Invalidation level: a SARB fixing above 18.6489
How this EUR/ZAR call was built
The price is SARB series EXCZ002D, 201 fixings from January 2, 2026 to October 20, 2026, a weighted average of banks' rates at approximately 10:30, not a New York close. The policy rate is MMRD002A and consumer prices are CPI1000F. The horizon is the next upcoming announcement on the SARB Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) page, November 19, 2026. Deposit-facility rates are from the ECB key-rate table, and the October dates are from the Governing Council calendar. Euro-area inflation is from Christine Lagarde's October 17, 2026 statement. The moving averages are arithmetic means calculated for this note. The half-range target is a chart projection, not a fair value.
The fixing is leaning on the year's low
The SARB rand-per-euro fixing is the reference price for this EUR/ZAR call, and it is already pressed against the 2026 low. On October 20, 2026 the fixing was 18.4303, against 19.3890 on January 2, 2026, a fall of 0.9587 rand, or 4.94%, on series EXCZ002D. The year's high was 19.8378 on March 23, 2026, and the year's low was 18.4090 on October 13, 2026, so the latest reading is only 0.0213 rand above the low. The average of the 50 fixings from August 11, 2026 to October 20, 2026 is 18.6489, and the average of the 20 fixings from September 22, 2026 is 18.5799. Both sit above the spot print. The base-case target of 18.2290 is half of the 0.3600 range between the October 1 high of 18.7690 and the October 13 low, extended below that low. From 18.4303 to 18.2290 is 0.2013 rand, or 1.09%.

"The forecast from our Quarterly Projection Model (QPM) has the policy rate broadly stable through the remainder of this year. The model shows cuts later in the forecast, as inflation falls to 3% and the QPM moves to a more neutral policy stance."
— Lesetja Kganyago, governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB MPC statement, September 2026)
Why an unchanged 475-basis-point gap can still nudge the fixing lower
The nominal policy gap in this note is the SARB policy rate minus the ECB deposit facility, and it is unchanged on the year even though EUR/ZAR has fallen. On October 20, 2026 the SARB rate was 7.25% and the deposit facility was 2.50%, a gap of 475 basis points. On January 2, 2026 the rates were 6.75% and 2.00%, also 475 basis points. On September 15 they were 7.00% and 2.25%, again 475. The ECB increase took effect on September 16 and left a 450-basis-point gap until the SARB's unanimous rise to 7.25% on September 25 restored 475. Governor Lesetja Kganyago's Quarterly Projection Model has the policy rate broadly stable through the rest of 2026, so the base case does not need a third increase. It needs the gap not to shrink before November 19. The price expression is a drift from 18.4303 to 18.2290, about 1.09%.
South African inflation does not make a cut the base case. The SARB monetary-policy page sets the target at 3%, plus or minus one percentage point, and the goal remains 3%. CPI was 3.1% in March 2026, 5.0% in June and 4.4% in August, the latest CPI1000F print on October 21. August is 0.4 percentage points above the top of the band. The next figure is listed as due that day and was not yet in the series.
The opposing case is the bull case of 18.7690, and it runs through Frankfurt. The Governing Council meets on October 28 and October 29, 2026, with the press conference on October 29. Another 25-basis-point rise would take the deposit facility to 2.75% and, if the SARB stays at 7.25%, cut the gap to 450 basis points. Lagarde has flagged upside inflation risks into 2027. If that rise is delivered, a path below 18.4090 is the wrong map. One gap tied to one date is also the frame of the EUR/CAD rate-gap note, the EUR/AUD note into November 3 and the USD/CHF rate-gap case.
What the half-range projection leaves out
The 18.2290 figure uses only the October 1 high of 18.7690 and the October 13 low of 18.4090. It ignores the fuel shock behind the unanimous rise to 7.25% on September 25. Kganyago also said headline inflation will likely be above 5% later this year. The fixing can also jump: it went from 18.9183 on March 2, 2026 to 19.8378 on March 23, a gain of 0.9195 rand, still the 2026 high. The test is a SARB fixing on or before November 19, 2026.
"Taking these three criteria together, the energy shock is too large to “look through” but a measured response remains appropriate to keep inflation in check."
— Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB IMFC statement, October 17, 2026)
What would invalidate this call
The base case of 18.2290 by November 19, 2026 breaks if any one of these four observations prints:
- A SARB rand-per-euro fixing above 18.6489. That is the 50-fixing average from August 11 to October 20, 2026, and the invalidation level.
- An ECB deposit facility above 2.50% on October 29, 2026. With the SARB rate still at 7.25%, that narrows the 475-basis-point gap before the committee meets.
- A SARB fixing above 18.7690. That is the October 1 high and the bull-case price, and it would retrace the swing behind 18.2290.
- A SARB policy rate below 7.25% on November 19, 2026. That would break the Quarterly Projection Model path of a rate broadly stable through the rest of this year.
What to watch before the November 19 announcement
The September statement page lists the next inflation figure as due on October 21, 2026, beside a 4.4% reading. Until it appears in CPI1000F, August is the latest CPI observation used here. The ECB Governing Council calendar sets the meeting for October 28 and October 29, with the press conference on October 29, and the key-rate table shows the deposit facility at 2.50% from September 16. Fixings on the SARB market-rates page can be set against 18.4090 and 18.6489. The MPC page lists November 19, 2026 next. The next date on the list, January 28, 2027, is outside this horizon.
TL;DR
EUR/ZAR, on the SARB rand-per-euro fixing, was 18.4303 on October 20, 2026, 4.94% below the January 2 fixing of 19.3890. The base case is 18.2290 by the November 19, 2026 MPC announcement, with 18.0490 if the October range extends in full and 18.7690 if the October 1 high is retaken. The gap is 475 basis points: a SARB policy rate of 7.25% minus an ECB deposit facility of 2.50%. It is a small chart extension that survives only if the gap stays put. A fixing above 18.6489 retires the call. The ECB press conference on October 29 can change the gap first.
FAQ
What is the EUR/ZAR base case into the November SARB meeting?
The base case is that the SARB rand-per-euro fixing reaches 18.2290 on or before November 19, 2026, the next announcement on the SARB Monetary Policy Committee page. The latest fixing in this note is 18.4303 on October 20, 2026, so the base case is a further 0.2013 rand, about 1.09%. The bear case is 18.0490 and the bull case is 18.7690. These are scenario prices for the fixing, not a recommendation to take a position in the cross.
How was 18.2290 calculated?
It is half of one observed swing. The SARB fixing was 18.7690 on October 1, 2026 and 18.4090 on October 13, 2026. The range is 0.3600 rand and half of it is 0.1800. Subtracting 0.1800 from the October 13 low gives 18.2290. Subtracting the full 0.3600 gives 18.0490. The year's low and the October 13 low are the same print. It uses only EXCZ002D, rounded to four decimals.
What is the policy gap between the SARB and the ECB?
The gap is the SARB policy rate minus the ECB deposit facility. On October 20, 2026 the SARB rate was 7.25% and the deposit facility was 2.50%, a difference of 475 basis points. The gap was also 475 basis points on September 15, at 7.00% and 2.25%, and on January 2, at 6.75% and 2.00%. From September 16 to September 25 it was 450 basis points, because the ECB had moved and the SARB had not.
What would prove this EUR/ZAR call wrong?
Any one of four prints is enough. A fixing above 18.6489 reclaims the 50-observation average and is the invalidation level. A deposit facility above 2.50% on October 29, 2026 narrows the gap. A fixing above 18.7690 retakes the October 1 high. A SARB policy rate below 7.25% on November 19, 2026 breaks the path of a rate that stays broadly stable through the rest of the year.
