COMEX copper reaches $6.34 a pound by December 9, 2026 in the base case, $6.24 in the bear case and $6.894 in the bull case. The reference is the December 2026 contract. The path is a refined surplus already reported, beside a funds-rate median that still sits above the current target range.
December 2026 copper, code HGZ6, last printed 6.5 on CME Group's China copper page, or $6.50 a pound, stamped October 24, 2026 at 05:00, up $0.10. The International Copper Study Group (ICSG) release of October 23, 2026 put the January-through-August refined surplus at about 218,000 tonnes, against about 158,000 tonnes a year earlier. What follows joins that surplus to the September 16 policy path and the three prices.
Key Levels:
• Asset: COMEX copper December 2026 (HGZ6) last $6.50/lb — CME Group China quote feed, October 24, 2026 at 05:00
• Base case target: $6.34/lb by December 9, 2026 — September 15 area in the September 23 metals weekly
• Bull case target: $6.894/lb — 689.4 cent high on September 9, 2026, if the December median falls to 3.9 percent
• Bear case target: $6.24/lb — desk map, $6.34 less the October 21 weekly's 1.52 percent drop
• Major support: $6.37/lb — HGZ6 session low on that feed
• Major resistance: $6.53/lb — HGZ6 session high on that feed
• Invalidation level: daily close above $6.894/lb — the September 9 high
How the reference price and the horizon were fixed
The reference is the delayed last for COMEX copper code HGZ6: last 6.5, volume 42,983, open interest 162,532, stamped October 24, 2026 at 05:00. The page says the data are delayed by at least ten minutes. The cmegroup.com settlements host returned an access block, so the figure used is the one that feed returned. A 25,000-pound contract and a 0.0005 minimum, equal to $12.50, is why 6.5 is read as $6.50 a pound.
The horizon is December 9, 2026, the second day of the December 8-9 projections meeting on the Board's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) calendar, matching the September 16 statement date. October 27-28 is unmarked for projections. Balances are the ICSG pages of October 14 and October 23. Positioning is the CFTC copper report of October 20, 2026.
Where the December contract sits against the September range
COMEX copper at $6.50 a pound is the delayed last on the December 2026 cathode contract, and the base case of $6.34 is the September 15 area in the September 23 weekly, 16 cents under that last. Futures Daily, on September 17, recorded 658.2 cents on August 20, a high of 689.4 cents on September 9, equal to $6.894, and a mid-September print of 639.5 cents, a 7.2 percent retreat. The September 23 weekly still closed at $6.6125, up 1.37 percent. The October 14 weekly then rose 1.50 percent and the October 21 weekly fell 1.52 percent. ICSG puts COMEX stocks 252,598 tonnes above the end of 2025. Managed money on October 20 was long 67,225 and short 19,535, a net 47,690, down from a net 61,058 on October 13, inside all-months copper open interest of 327,119 contracts.
The bull case of $6.894 needs the year-end funds-rate median down at 3.9 percent. The bear case of $6.24 is a desk mapping, 6.34 times 0.9848, from the October 21 weekly's 1.52 percent decline. The 16-cent fade is smaller than the 7.2 percent September retreat and lines up with the 104,000 tonne full-year surplus. Chairman Warsh put commodity prices beside the policy choice.

"I noted in Jackson Hole that overall commodity prices also bear watching. And, over the intermeeting period, the prices of many of these key inputs have risen."

Why the surplus and the dots can cap the contract together
A refined surplus and a tight concentrate market can show up in the same month. World mine output fell 0.9 percent in January through August, concentrate fell 1.9 percent, and Chilean mine output fell 7 percent at El Teniente, Escondida and Spence, while Indonesian concentrate is estimated down 29 percent. Mine capacity utilisation was 77.0 percent in the October 23 ICSG release, yet refined production rose 1.7 percent and the refined balance was a surplus of about 218,000 tonnes. Scrap and solvent extraction can feed users. The October 21 weekly printed a treatment charge of −$240.83 a tonne, and Freeport's October 2 filing says Grasberg-district mills ran about 140,000 metric tons of ore a day, about 67 percent of the pre-incident rate. The contract delivers cathode, so the 252,598 tonne COMEX stock build is the leg the fade uses.
On September 16, 2026 the Committee voted 12-0 to raise the target range by a quarter point, to 3-3/4 to 4 percent. The projections table puts the 2026 and 2027 median funds rate at 4.1 percent, up from 3.8 percent in June. Chairman Warsh relayed that median while withholding a personal dot. The 10-year yield call is the rates companion. The October 14 ICSG forecast puts the 2026 refined surplus at about 104,000 tonnes and the 2027 surplus at about 368,000 tonnes.
"The Freeport team achieved strong results in the second quarter, supported by solid execution of our operating plans and favorable pricing for our products. We made steady progress with our Grasberg ramp-up and our Americas operations delivered excellent performance."
— Kathleen Quirk, President and Chief Executive Officer, Freeport-McMoRan (second-quarter 2026 exhibit, filed July 23, 2026)
Where the framework can misread the next six weeks
The gap between the 104,000 tonne full-year surplus and the 218,000 tonne January-August figure is about 114,000 tonnes, desk arithmetic for what September through December would have to absorb. The October 23 bonded-stock line trims that eight-month surplus to about 181,000 tonnes, and ICSG warns that unreported Chinese stocks can move the balance. The September retreat of 7.2 percent, from 689.4 cents to 639.5 cents, is the swing a slower fade would echo.
What would invalidate the fade
The base case to $6.34 breaks if any one of these four signals prints:
- A daily close in HGZ6 above $6.894. That is the September 9 high of 689.4 cents.
- The December 9 projections put the 2026 funds-rate median at 3.9 percent or lower. That is the floor of the September range.
- A later ICSG line shows the 252,598 tonne COMEX build versus the end of 2025 fully reversed. The fade treats that build as cathode already in store.
- Managed-money net length climbs back above 61,058 contracts. The October 20 net was 47,690, down from 61,058 on October 13.
What to watch before the December projections
October 27-28 is the first checkpoint, left unmarked for projections. The October 21 weekly already put October hike odds below 15 percent, and COMEX silver fell 6.50 percent that same week, the move in silver under the real-yield path. The date on the view is December 9, 2026, the same peg as the Toronto index call on higher bond yields. Levels to mark are $6.37, $6.34, $6.53 and $6.894. Further coverage sits on the market news desk.
TL;DR
COMEX copper last printed $6.50 a pound on CME Group's China feed stamped October 24, 2026, for the December 2026 contract. The base case is $6.34 by December 9, 2026, with $6.24 a desk extension and $6.894 the September 9 high that ends the fade on a daily close. ICSG reported a refined surplus of about 218,000 tonnes in the first eight months of 2026. The September 16 median funds rate for the end of 2026 is 4.1 percent, above the current 3-3/4 to 4 percent range.
FAQ
