The US dollar against the Malaysian ringgit (USD/MYR) reaches 4.1050 by November 5, 2026 in the base case, 4.1196 in the bull case and 4.0378 in the bear case. The base case adds 20/43 of the rise since the September 3 hold to the October 16 Kuala Lumpur reference.

That reference was 4.0837 on October 16, 2026, up 0.0459 from 4.0378 on September 3, when Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) kept the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) at 2.75%. Twenty calendar days run from that print to the November 5 decision, against 43 days since the hold, so the increment rounds to 0.0213. The higher call is wrong if the reference prints below 4.0692.

Key Levels:

• Asset: USD/MYR at 4.0837 — KL reference, October 16, 2026 (BNM reference page)
• Base case target: 4.1050 by November 5, 2026 — 20/43 of the 0.0459 rise from 4.0378, added to 4.0837
• Bull case target: 4.1196 — June 25, 2026 print, nearest year-to-date reference above 4.1050, if the OPR is cut
• Bear case target: 4.0378 — full return to the September 3, 2026 reference
• Major support: 4.0692 — September 23, 2026 reference, the low after the mid-September jump
• Major resistance: 4.0990 — September 17, 2026 reference, the high since the hold
• Invalidation level: a daily reference below 4.0692 — the higher call is wrong beneath the September 23 low

How 4.1050 is measured off the Kuala Lumpur reference

Three BNM pages, opened on October 19, 2026, set the levels. The monetary-stability page prints the next Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision as November 5, 2026, and the OPR as 2.75% as of September 3. The schedule lists that Thursday as the sixth decision and the statement at 3:00 p.m. The spot is the series labelled “KL USD/MYR Reference Rate”. Its latest non-zero row was October 16 at 4.0837. The October 19 row is 0.0000 and is not a fixing. Repeated dates on the year-to-date view were collapsed to one row. A 1200-session middle rate of 4.0815 on October 19 (BNM exchange-rate API, last updated 15:31:24) is not the spot. No Commitments of Traders (COT) file is used. The same Thursday is the horizon on the sterling-rand call.

Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) yield and the Malaysia Overnight Rate (MYOR) are the reference-page banner, both as at October 16. October mean: 49.0211 divided by 12. Window: September 3 to November 5, 2026.

USD/MYR in this note is the Kuala Lumpur reference rate from Bank Negara Malaysia, ringgit per one US dollar, not a banknote counter and not the noon middle rate. Read on October 19, 2026, the latest row was 4.0837 for October 16. The September 3 row, when the Overnight Policy Rate was held at 2.75%, was 4.0378. The rise is 0.0459. Forty-three calendar days separate those prints, and 20 remain until November 5. The share 20/43 of 0.0459 is 0.0213488, which rounds to 0.0213, and 4.0837 plus 0.0213 is 4.1050. The bull case is the June 25 print of 4.1196, the nearest year-to-date reference above 4.1050. The bear case returns to 4.0378. A daily print below the September 23 low of 4.0692 invalidates the higher path. October’s mean of 4.0851 shows the base case extends the climb rather than reverting to the month.

"Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) strategic value lies in consistency. By maintaining the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75 per cent, the central bank has balanced price stability, domestic growth and orderly financial conditions without defending an explicit exchange-rate target. That measured stance matters. It allows the ringgit to absorb global shocks while preserving policy credibility, domestic liquidity and two-way market functioning."

— Shan Saeed, global chief economist, Juwai IQI (The Star, July 28, 2026)

Why a held OPR can still coincide with a higher reference

The September 3 statement maintained the OPR at 2.75% and called the stance consistent with price stability and sustainable growth. Every 2026 decision on the table is a hold. The base case still carries part of the rise that followed. The key-figures panel, read on October 19, prints second-quarter growth at 6.0% and September headline inflation at 1.8%. Those are not the statement’s averages. The reference still rose from 4.0378 to 4.0990 before settling at 4.0837. A held rate is also the frame for the baht policy-hold note.

A November 5, 2026 path for USD/MYR runs into the sixth Monetary Policy Committee decision, released at 3:00 p.m. that Thursday. The September 3 statement held the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75% after first-half growth of 5.7%, with 2026 growth put at around 5% and with headline and core inflation averaging 1.8% and 2% over seven months. The key-figures panel read on October 19 prints second-quarter growth at 6.0% and September inflation at 1.8%. The Star, citing the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) advance estimate, reported third-quarter growth of 5.3% after 6.0% the quarter before. Those figures are not a vote, which is why the base case does not assume a cut. It keeps the OPR at 2.75% and carries 20/43 of the post-hold rise, from 4.0837 to 4.1050. The bull case of 4.1196 needs a cut or a retest of the June 25 reference. A hike invalidates the higher call.

What the calendar fraction leaves out

The fraction treats the 0.0459 rise as a steady pace. It was not. Most of the climb was done by September 17, at 4.0990, and October’s range is only 0.0068 wide, from 4.0819 to 4.0887. Carrying the jump forward can overstate a grind. The base case sits 0.0060 above a high that has not been retaken, and 0.0199 above the October mean of 4.0851. That gap is why a break of 4.0692 retires the call before a full rewind to 4.0378 is required. No COT report was opened, so a crowded position is invisible. The Star’s 8 a.m. quote on October 19 was 4.0790/0855, against a Friday close of 4.0795/0835. An unchanged 2.75% OPR has already coincided with a move from 4.0378 to 4.0990, so the rate alone does not deliver 4.1050.

"Therefore, the ringgit-US dollar could trade in the range between RM4.07 and RM4.08 today."

— Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, chief economist, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd (The Star, October 19, 2026)

What would invalidate this call

The base case to 4.1050 breaks if any one of these four signals prints.

  • A Kuala Lumpur reference below 4.0692. That is the September 23 low, 0.0145 under the October 16 print, and it is the invalidation. The bear case of 4.0378, a full rewind to September 3, sits further down.
  • November 5 raises the OPR. The fraction assumes the rate held all year is still the setting. A hike is the opposite of the softer ringgit in the base case. A cut belongs to the 4.1196 bull case, not to this signal.
  • The November 5 reference is still inside 4.07 to 4.08. That is the band Afzanizam gave for the October 19 dealing range. If the reference itself is still there, the 0.0213 extension has not happened.
  • The statement drops the line that 2.75% matches the outlook. Guidance that a hike is being prepared removes the hold premise.

What to watch into the November 5 statement

A blackout begins 10 calendar days before the release, on October 26, 2026, and ends when the statement is published at 3:00 p.m. on November 5. The next reference after October 16 shows whether the 4.08 band breaks towards 4.0990 or back towards 4.0692. The Star, citing the Department of Statistics, put third-quarter growth at 5.3% after 6.0% the quarter before. That print is context for the hold, not a second price path. On the day, read the print against 4.1050, against 4.1196 if the statement cuts, and against 4.0692 if the higher call is over. A second cross into that Thursday is the sterling-krone rate-gap note.

TL;DR

USD/MYR reaches 4.1050 by November 5, 2026 in the base case, 4.1196 if the committee cuts and the reference retests June 25, and 4.0378 if the post-hold rise is fully unwound. The October 16 Kuala Lumpur reference was 4.0837, up 0.0459 from 4.0378 on September 3, when the OPR was held at 2.75%. The base case is 20/43 of that rise, an increment of 0.0213. A daily reference below 4.0692 breaks the call. October’s 12-session mean is 4.0851, so the path extends the climb rather than returning to this month’s average.

FAQ

Where does USD/MYR stand before the November 5 decision?

The October 16, 2026 Kuala Lumpur reference was 4.0837, up 0.0459 from 4.0378 on September 3. Twelve October sessions average 4.0851, inside a range of 4.0819 to 4.0887. The base case is 4.1050 by November 5, the bull case is 4.1196 and the bear case is 4.0378. A daily print below 4.0692 breaks the higher call.

How is the 4.1050 base case calculated?

Subtract 4.0378, the September 3 reference, from 4.0837 on October 16. The rise is 0.0459. Count 43 calendar days between the prints and 20 from October 16 to November 5. Twenty divided by 43, times 0.0459, is 0.0213488, which rounds to 0.0213. Adding 0.0213 to 4.0837 produces 4.1050. The bull and bear cases are observed rows.

What is the OPR, and when is the next decision?

The Overnight Policy Rate is 2.75% as of September 3, 2026. The next decision on the monetary-stability page is November 5, 2026, with the statement at 3:00 p.m. A blackout starts on October 26, 10 calendar days earlier. Every 2026 decision has been a hold. A hike on November 5 would invalidate the higher call.

What level retires the 4.1050 base case?

A daily Kuala Lumpur reference below 4.0692 retires the 4.1050 base case. That September 23 low is 0.0145 under the October 16 print and is the invalidation, not the bull target. The 4.1196 bull case needs a cut or a retest of June 25. The 4.0378 bear case returns to September 3.
