GBP/ZAR to 21.70 by 5 November: the rand carry case
GBP/ZAR reaches 21.70 by November 5, 2026 in the base case. The October 15 Bank of England reference was 21.8884, and a daily print above 22.15 breaks the call.

British pound against the South African rand (GBP/ZAR) reaches 21.70 by November 5, 2026 in the base case, 22.40 in the bull case and 21.45 in the bear case, because a 3.50 percentage point policy-rate gap in the rand's favour survives a single Bank of England step.
The latest Bank of England sterling reference, dated October 15, 2026, put the rand at 21.8884 per pound, only 0.4879 above the 52-week low of 21.4005 on the same page. Bank Rate is 3.75%, and the calendar sets the next decision, with the Monetary Policy Report, for November 5, 2026. The South African policy rate on the September statement is 7.25%.
Key Levels:
• Asset: GBP/ZAR at 21.8884 — Bank of England daily reference, October 15, 2026
• Base case target: 21.70 by November 5, 2026 — 0.1884 below that reference
• Bull case target: 22.40 — November 5 lifts Bank Rate and the summary guides another increase
• Bear case target: 21.45 — Bank Rate stays at 3.75% near the 52-week low of 21.4005
• Major support: 21.4005 — 52-week low, Bank of England database, October 15, 2026
• Major resistance: 22.15 — 0.2616 above the October 15 reference; retires the lower call
• Invalidation level: a daily reference above 22.15 — the lower call is wrong above that print
How the reference rate and the gap were measured
Three pages, opened on October 18, 2026, set the levels. The Bank of England (BOE) calendar puts the November Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) summary, minutes and Monetary Policy Report on Thursday, November 5, 2026, with Bank Rate at 3.75%. The daily sterling database supplies the October 15 references and the 52-week highs and lows. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) September statement supplies the 7.25% policy rate, the 4.4% inflation rate on that page, and the later dates. No Commitments of Traders (COT) file was opened, so positioning is excluded. Targets are distances from the October 15 rand print.
Where 21.8884 sits in the sterling range
GBP/ZAR is the Bank of England's daily count of rand per pound. On October 15, 2026, the latest row, the reference was 21.8884. The same page sets the 52-week high at 23.3176 and the low at 21.4005, leaving the print 0.4879 above the low and 1.4292 below the high. The euro reference was 1.1830, only 0.0005 under its high of 1.1835, and the dollar reference was 1.3253 between a high of 1.3790 and a low of 1.3042. Sterling is soft against the rand and firm against the euro. The base-case step from 21.8884 to 21.70 by November 5, 2026 is a further 0.1884 decline, smaller than the gap that remains to the 52-week low. The call does not need a break of the year's floor. The Bank says the figures are not official rates, and they carry no more authority than a London commercial quote.

"Import prices remain contained, with help from the rand, which has been notably resilient throughout the year."
— Lesetja Kganyago, Governor, South African Reserve Bank (SARB, September 2026 MPC statement)
Why a 3.50-point gap survives one hike
In September the MPC voted 6–3 to hold Bank Rate at 3.75%. Governor Andrew Bailey was in the majority. Megan Greene, Catherine L. Mann and Huw Pill preferred 4%. The summary found little evidence so far of material second-round effects. Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation was 3.1% in August.
The carry gap is the SARB policy rate minus Bank Rate: 7.25% on the September statement against 3.75% on the BOE calendar, or 3.50 percentage points. A 25 basis point rise on November 5, 2026 would leave 3.25 percentage points and would not close the rand's advantage. The statement says the Quarterly Projection Model (QPM) keeps the policy rate broadly stable through the rest of this year, and lists the next announcement on November 19, 2026, after this horizon. Only the British leg can move before then. James Smith at ING wrote on October 15, 2026 that investors are "pricing in rates rising by a full percentage point over the next year", so one step is already in that path. Sterling can firm against the euro and still fail to lift this cross, because more than three points of carry stay with the rand at 3.75% or at 4%. The base case is a drift to 21.70, not a break of 21.4005.
Smith, UK economist at ING, called the move insurance: "Inflation looks set to briefly top 4% next year and that's likely to trigger a November insurance rate hike from the Bank of England." A hike the summary presents as the start of a sequence is the bull case at 22.40, the risk already set out for sterling into the November meeting. The rand leg of the gap is the 3% inflation-target path.
What the carry framework leaves out
Two limits can beat the gap inside three weeks. With no COT reading, a crowded rand long is invisible and would unwind as a higher GBP/ZAR. The rand also imports oil. The September statement records a petrol under-recovery of R2.83 per litre. The BOE minutes are the analogue: on September 14 Brent stood at $106 a barrel, closer in the Committee's view to the July adverse scenario than to the July central path. Another such shock cheapens the rand while Bank Rate is still 3.75%, and the drift to 21.70 no longer fits.
"We still think BoE rate expectations are too hawkish for 2027 (100bp by July), but one or two hikes are looking increasingly likely."
— Francesco Pesole, FX Strategist, ING (ING Think, FX Daily)
What would invalidate this call
The base case to 21.70 breaks if any one of these four signals prints.
- A BOE daily rand reference above 22.15. That is 0.2616 above 21.8884. Any daily reference before or on November 5 retires the lower call.
- November 5 lifts Bank Rate to 4% and guides another increase as likely. One insurance step fits 21.70. A stated sequence does not.
- The rand cheapens while sterling does not. A rand reference above 22.00 beside a dollar reference below 1.3100, on the same page, is a rand shock, not a Bank Rate move.
- The SARB drops the stable-rate line before November 5. Guiding cuts forward would shrink the carry. November 19 itself is after the horizon.
What to watch into November 5
Thursday, November 5, 2026 brings the decision, the minutes and the Monetary Policy Report. Read the next daily rand reference after it. A hold at 3.75% points to 21.45. An insurance hike still fits 21.70. A further increase is 22.40, and a reference above 22.15 ends the call. ING flags October 28 as the UK budget. The SARB lists November 19, 2026 next, after the horizon. Another sterling cross into that decision shares the date, not the direction.
TL;DR
GBP/ZAR reaches 21.70 by November 5, 2026 in the base case, 22.40 if the Bank hikes and guides another rise, and 21.45 if Bank Rate stays at 3.75%. The October 15 reference was 21.8884, against a 52-week low of 21.4005. The gap is 7.25% minus 3.75%, or 3.50 percentage points, and one 25 basis point step leaves 3.25. The SARB's next announcement is November 19, after this horizon. September's vote was 6–3 to hold. A daily reference above 22.15 breaks the call.
FAQ
Where does GBP/ZAR stand before the November 5 decision?
The October 15, 2026 Bank of England reference was 21.8884 rand per pound, 0.4879 above the 52-week low of 21.4005. The base case is 21.70 by November 5, 2026. The bull case is 22.40 if the Bank hikes and guides another rise. The bear case is 21.45 if Bank Rate stays at 3.75%. These are paths for that reference, not orders.
What is Bank Rate, and when is the next decision?
Bank Rate is 3.75%, and the next decision is November 5, 2026, with the minutes and the Monetary Policy Report. September's vote was 6–3 to hold, with three members preferring 4%. CPI inflation was 3.1% in August. A rise to 4% would narrow the gap to the 7.25% South African rate from 3.50 percentage points to 3.25. This call ends on that publication.
Why does the South African rate matter before November 5?
The SARB statement prints the policy rate at 7.25% and says the model keeps it broadly stable through this year. The next announcement listed is November 19, 2026, after the horizon, so only the Bank of England can change the gap before November 5. Kganyago called the rand resilient. That case fails if the SARB brings cuts forward before the British decision.
What level retires the 21.70 base case?
A daily Bank of England rand reference above 22.15 retires the 21.70 base case. That is 0.2616 above the October 15 print of 21.8884, and it is the invalidation, not the bull target. The 22.40 bull case needs a hike plus guidance of another increase. The 21.45 bear case is a hold at 3.75% near the 52-week low of 21.4005.
