Sensex back to 73,123.83 on the next RBI hike

The BSE Sensex base case is 73,123.83 by December 4, 2026 if the RBI hikes the 5.50% repo rate again. A close above 74,729.27 breaks the bearish call.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex finishes at 73,123.83 by December 4, 2026 in the base case, at 75,795.23 if the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) pauses, and at 71,292.88 if December brings a 50 basis point hike. The base case is another rise in the policy repo rate from 5.50%, handing back the bounce from the October 23 close to the October 30 close of 74,459.53.

The BSE equity board stamped October 30, 2026 at 16:00 and marked it Close, at 74,459.53, up 308.49 points, or 0.42%, from 74,151.04. The horizon is the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of December 2 to 4, 2026, the next date on the Reserve Bank calendar and in the October 7 resolution. A further hike under calibrated tightening maps the index back to the October 23 close.

Key Levels:

• Asset: BSE Sensex 74,459.53 — October 30, 2026 close, BSE board, 16:00
• Base case target: 73,123.83 by December 4, 2026 — October 23, 2026 BSE close
• Bull case target: 75,795.23 if the repo stays at 5.50% — the 1,335.70 point advance added again
• Bear case target: 71,292.88 on a 50 basis point hike — October 1, 2026 52-week low
• Major support: 73,598.67 — October 27, 2026 BSE close
• Major resistance: 74,729.27 — October 16, 2026 BSE close
• Invalidation level: December 4, 2026 close above 74,729.27 — that October 16 print

How these levels were taken from the BSE board and the RBI calendar

The spot is the October 30, 2026 close on the BSE board, read on November 1, 2026, with 1,351 advances, 3,015 declines and equity turnover of ₹9,343.43 crore. The October 16 close of 74,729.27 is that session's board print, and the October 28 official close is missing from this level set. The Reserve Bank calendar lists December 2 to 4, 2026 next. The October 5 to 7 resolution supplies the 5.50% repo, the stance and the projections. The October 28 Sensex page showed earnings at 19.14 times, a high of 86,159.02 on December 1, 2025 and a low of 71,292.88 on October 1, 2026. The 50 basis point bear step is State Bank of India (SBI) Research's forecast.

The October tape: a narrow Sensex rise beside a falling BANKEX

The BSE Sensex call into the December meeting is a give-back of the late-October bounce if the Reserve Bank of India raises the policy repo rate again. The exchange board showed the Sensex at 74,459.53 at the October 30, 2026 close, up 308.49 points, or 0.42%, from 74,151.04. The base-case destination is 73,123.83, the October 23, 2026 close, where that bounce began. The gap is 1,335.70 points, about 1.79% of the October 30 print. The horizon is the Monetary Policy Committee meeting of December 2 to 4, 2026, the next date on the Reserve Bank's 2026-27 schedule and the date named in the October 7 resolution. A pause at the 5.50% repo rate is the bull case and maps to 75,795.23, that same 1,335.70 point advance added once more to the October 30 close. A 50 basis point hike, the step SBI Research has kept for December, maps to the October 1 low of 71,292.88, which sits 3,166.65 points under the October 30 close.

"Members cited rising inflationary pressures and firm growth as reasons behind the 25bp hike. Tone of the commentary put two external members in the most hawkish camp, as they emphasised the broadening inflation risks and need for pre-emptive action, while two others were considered mildly hawkish/neutral as they supported only incremental hikes and explicitly rejected signalling a prolonged tightening cycle."

— Radhika Rao, Senior Economist and Executive Director, DBS Bank (ETBFSI, October 22, 2026)

Why a further hike maps onto the October 23 close

Calibrated tightening, set on October 7, 2026, links the 5.50% repo to a lower Sensex by December 4. The resolution says the stance puts rate cuts off the table and leaves the next action as a hike or a pause. The repo rose 25 basis points to 5.50% under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF), the standing deposit facility (SDF) is 5.25%, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) and Bank Rate are 5.75%. Nagesh Kumar and Ram Singh wanted a neutral stance, so tightening is the majority view under Governor Sanjay Malhotra. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is projected at 6.0% for October-December, and gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 7.1% for 2026-27.

The bank leg is where that branch meets the tape. On October 30 the Sensex rose 0.42% while the BANKEX fell 0.49%, from 61,718.48 to 61,415.25, with 3,015 declines against 1,351 advances and Focused IT up 1.91% at 38,892.55. The Economic Times reported on October 26, 2026 that CS Setty, chairman of State Bank of India, expects a further 50 basis point hike in December and slower discretionary-spending borrowings as rates rise. A further hike would press bank funding costs after information technology did the lifting. The resolution also cites a 25 basis point Federal Reserve hike in September, the backdrop in the desk note on the US 10-year yield under Federal Reserve hikes, beside the note on rupee pressure and Reserve Bank reserve operations. A pause is the arithmetic behind 75,795.23, and the 50 basis point case SBI Research has kept would revisit 71,292.88.

"The hike was unanimous, but the 4-2 vote on stance shows two members preferred to keep flexibility rather than commit to a tightening bias. Much of the inflation is supply-driven (monsoon, El Niño, energy), and rate hikes do little against it, so the real aim is to prevent second-round effects. Core inflation excluding precious metals is just 2.9%, which suggests underlying pressures are still contained."

— Sumit Singhania, Head of Research, Bajaj Broking (Bajaj Broking comment, October 7, 2026)

Where a repeat of the late-October advance stops being a forecast

Five closes are a thin base for repeating 1,335.70 points. August core inflation excluding precious metals was 2.9%, and the 19.14 earnings multiple is the October 28 session figure. The high of 86,159.02 sits 11,699.49 points above the October 30 close. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser at State Bank of India, expects "the peak inflation rate by November below 6.5 per cent". Onshore closes are separate from the Reserve Bank and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) split on offshore brokers.

What would invalidate this call

The base case, a December 4 close at 73,123.83, breaks if any one of these four observations lands:

  • The Sensex closes December 4, 2026 above 74,729.27. That October 16 BSE close is the ceiling, and a finish above it means the give-back has failed on the expiry day.
  • The MPC leaves the repo rate at 5.50% on December 4. A hold is the bull case, and the level mapped to it is 75,795.23.
  • The resolution restores a neutral stance. Nagesh Kumar and Ram Singh already wanted that in October, and if their view becomes the committee view the hike branch loses its premise.
  • The BSE BANKEX closes December 4 above 61,718.48 while the Sensex holds above 74,459.53. That 61,718.48 print is the October 29 BANKEX close, before the drop of 303.23 points, so a recovery through it would mean the bank drag has healed.

What to watch through the December meeting

The MPC meets December 2 to 4, 2026. Watch the repo rate against 5.50%, the stance against calibrated tightening, and the 6.0% October-December inflation projection. Tape levels are 74,729.27, 73,123.83, 74,459.53 and BANKEX at 61,415.25. February 3 to 5, 2027 sits outside this horizon. The 50 basis point path to 71,292.88 is the forecast BusinessLine reported from SBI Research, with Setty's view in the Economic Times account of October 26.

TL;DR

The BSE Sensex base case is 73,123.83 by December 4, 2026 if the Reserve Bank hikes the repo rate again from 5.50%. Spot is 74,459.53, the October 30, 2026 BSE close, up 308.49 points. A pause maps to 75,795.23, and a 50 basis point hike maps to the October 1 low of 71,292.88. The October 7 stance is calibrated tightening, with CPI projected at 6.0% for October-December and GDP growth at 7.1% for 2026-27. A December 4 close above 74,729.27 retires the call, as does a hold at 5.50%, after the BANKEX fell 0.49% on a day the Sensex rose 0.42%.

FAQ

Where does this Sensex call stand into the December meeting?

The base case is a December 4, 2026 close at 73,123.83, the October 23 BSE close, if the repo rate is hiked again from 5.50%. From the October 30 close of 74,459.53 that is a give-back of 1,335.70 points. The dates sit on the Reserve Bank's 2026-27 calendar. A pause maps to 75,795.23, and 50 basis points maps to 71,292.88.

What policy rate is the base case using?

The rate in use is the 5.50% repo set on October 7, 2026, up 25 basis points, with the deposit facility at 5.25% and the marginal facility and Bank Rate at 5.75%. Calibrated tightening leaves a hike or a pause. The base case takes the hike and puts 73,123.83 on it. The 71,292.88 bear level is State Bank of India Research's 50 basis point forecast.

What would show this call is wrong?

A December 4 close above 74,729.27, the October 16 BSE close, would show the give-back had failed on the day. A hold at 5.50% would shift the relevant level to 75,795.23. A neutral stance would drop the tightening bias Nagesh Kumar and Ram Singh preferred in October. A BANKEX close above 61,718.48, with the Sensex still above 74,459.53, would show the bank drag had healed.

Why does the BANKEX matter for a Sensex call?

On October 30, 2026 the Sensex rose 0.42% to 74,459.53 while the BANKEX fell 0.49% to 61,415.25 and Focused IT rose 1.91% to 38,892.55, with 3,015 declines against 1,351 advances. Banks moved the other way from the headline index, so the December 4 BANKEX close against 61,718.48 is one check on whether that rate-sensitive drag is still in place.
