Papertrade keeps PAPER token non-transferable amid criticism

Papertrade has kept its PAPER token non-transferable through public criticism of the transfer rule, and the docs updated on October 21, 2026 still say that at launch the token stays non-transferable between wallets. In its October 19, 2026 statement the papertrade.xyz account wrote that "at this juncture we do not have plans to allow off-contract token transferability," and gave an example with a $10 million bankroll where an attack costing $15 million "is not viable" on its own, while the same spend with $10 million of PAPER short exposure is "very viable indeed."

Phase four of the October 1 launch plan had said transfers would be enabled "after a sufficient period of time has passed," once the token had moved only through staking and unstaking to ease congestion on HyperEVM, the network Elysium is set to settle on. Signed by blurr and jez, the October 19 statement takes that phase off the roadmap, because perpetual markets outside the team's control would cap how large Papertrade can grow.

Why a short changes the bankroll math

Papertrade's FAQ describes synthetic swaps against one USDC pool on HyperEVM, marked to Hyperliquid's order-book mid rather than sent there as a perpetual. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) trade at up to 1,000×. The October 11 post stated the constraint: "a manipulation attack is always possible - whether economically advantageous to attempt is the question." Keeping the PAPER token inside the staking contract is how the team steps around that ceiling, limiting the bankroll "specifically to control this payoff curve" and calling a PAPER perpetual "a leveraged bet on bankroll solvency."

The statement thanks "the paragon team who, despite jumping the gun on us, have behaved with the utmost integrity and transparency once a dialogue was opened." On October 20, Jez, posting as @izebel_eth, wrote that he "specifically underestimated the demand for premarket perps," and that it is "better to think of it as a revenue share in the exchange than a traditional crypto token."

Alongside the transfer decision, the post changes fees and the mint curve. Curves on closes inside 6 basis points of entry in liquid hours, and 10 basis points off hours, affect bot-strategy profitability roughly 15x more than normal traders, the team said, beside a launch deadband of two-tenths of one basis point. Issuance becomes roughly one-tenth of one percent of supply per $1 million lost, while near insolvency the flat 100 PAPER per $1 of loss becomes a time-weighted multiplier, so PAPER sits "much closer to the exchange rakeback it was intended to be."

What staking still pays

Contract set 2 has been live since October 21, 2026, and its changelog changes the mint rule while leaving transferability unmentioned. Staked PAPER takes half of each 2% fee, pro rata, plus pool surplus above a $5 million reward cap, paid in USDC. Below zero, refill dollars count up to five times. One day after launch the October 11 post called the venue "a fully working 1000x exchange with 5m in the LP" that "has paid out 25M to stakers," and supply starts at zero. Unstaking returns PAPER to the wallet at once, the staking page says, with a zero cooldown, while an onward send stays disabled.

The criticism that followed

Unchained's October 23, 2026 report carried the sharpest criticism of that sequence. Jason Pagoulatos, head of markets at Delphi Digital, said the attack case is real and the timing is the problem: "You sell a bunch of people on a rule set beforehand, a bunch of money comes in, and now you change everything after the fact." He called that "kind of bait and switching you" and "a bad look." William M Peaster, senior writer at Bankless, framed the same choice as keeping the exchange and giving up a liquid token.

A perpetual at the center of the CFTC case over CME volume is a claim on a price. A perpetual on PAPER, in the October 19 wording, is "a leveraged bet on bankroll solvency." Deeper books on Hyperliquid, whose mark Papertrade reads, would raise the cost of that push. Until a contract change says otherwise, the cash the PAPER token delivers is the USDC staking stream, and off-contract transfer stays switched off.
