Canadian dollar/Swiss franc (CAD/CHF) reaches 0.5936 by December 9, 2026 in the base case, 0.6000 if October 28 raises the overnight target, and 0.58221 if the cross returns to the October 16 reciprocal. The base case adds the October 16-to-22 rise in the Bank of Canada reciprocal to the September 17 high.
The October 22, 2026 Bank of Canada fixing priced one Swiss franc at 1.7051 Canadian dollars. One divided by that fixing is 0.58648, the spot in this note. The base target of 0.5936 sits 0.00712 higher, about 71 pips, before the December 9, 2026 announcement on the Bank's calendar. The gap is 225 basis points: a 2.25% overnight target against a Swiss National Bank (SNB) policy rate of 0%. The disconfirmation section lists the four breaks.

• Invalidation level: 0.5800 on a fixing above 1.7241 — the July 23, 2026 print, reciprocal 0.58001
How the fixing and the calendar were read
CAD/CHF is not a Bank of Canada series. FXCHFCAD, on the daily exchange-rate page, is Canadian dollars per franc. This note inverts fixings from January 2, 2026 to October 22, 2026, rounded to five decimals. The print is a daily average, and Commitments of Traders (COT) data are not used. December 9, 2026 is the next announcement after October 28 on the key interest rate page, at 09:45 Eastern Time on the upcoming-events list. October 28 is the Monetary Policy Report (MPR) date inside the window, not the horizon.
What the Bank of Canada fixing shows
On October 22, 2026, FXCHFCAD was 1.7051 and the reciprocal was 0.58648. The January 2 fixing of 1.7342 is a reciprocal of 0.57663, so the cross is 1.71% higher. The sample high is 0.58931 on September 17 (1.6969) and the low is 0.56351 on January 27 (1.7746), a span of 0.02580. From the October 16 reciprocal of 0.58221 the cross rose 0.00427, or 43 pips, in four business days.

Sources: Bank of Canada Valet FXCHFCAD, January 2 to October 22, 2026, retrieved October 23, 2026; reciprocals by this desk. Target held at 2.25% on September 2 and still 2.25% on the October 22 daily digest. SNB rate 0% on September 24, 2026. Window: January 2, 2026 to October 22, 2026.
The gap is 2.25% minus 0%, or 225 basis points. The September 2 press release held the target. The daily digest still shows 2.25% on October 21 and the Canadian Overnight Repo Rate Average (CORRA) at 2.2500% on October 21. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation was 3.1% in September, with CPI-median at 1.9% and CPI-trim at 1.8%. Swiss inflation was 0.8% in August and the trimmed mean TM15 was 0.6%. The conditional forecast, at a policy rate of 0%, is 0.7% for 2026, 0.8% for 2027 and 0.8% for 2028.
"Since our last assessment, the Swiss franc has depreciated by around 3% on a trade-weighted basis. This depreciation was in line with the widening of interest rate differentials between the major currency areas and Switzerland."
— Martin Schlegel, Chairman of the Governing Board, Swiss National Bank (Swiss National Bank)
Why a 225 basis point gap can carry the cross to 0.5936
The base target of 0.5936 is an arithmetic extension of Bank of Canada fixings, not a rates-model output. Start from the high reciprocal in the 2026 sample, 0.58931 on September 17, when FXCHFCAD printed 1.6969. Add the rebound already observed, 0.58648 minus 0.58221, which is 0.00427. The sum is 0.59358, and the target is that sum rounded to four decimals. In the Bank's own units, 0.5936 is about 1.6846 Canadian dollars per franc, a new low against the September 17 fixing of 1.6969. The bull case at 0.6000 lies 0.01069 above that September reciprocal and applies only if October 28 raises the overnight target above 2.25%. The bear case at 0.58221 is the October 16 reciprocal. From the spot of 0.58648 the base target is 0.00712 away, about 71 pips, over the 48 days to December 9.
The CAD/CHF carry is the 225 basis point gap between the two central banks. The gap in the table is 225 basis points on every date, and the SNB forecast assumes the policy rate stays at 0%. The October 22 summary of the September discussion says an increased willingness to intervene is no longer necessary, and low volatility has made the franc more useful as a funding currency. The Swiss National Bank published that summary on October 22, 2026. A hold on October 28 would leave that gap intact into December 9. A hike, by contrast, is the bull case, not a condition for 0.5936. The opposing case sits in the core figures: CPI-median at 1.9% and CPI-trim at 1.8% let the Bank look through a 3.1% headline and give back the 0.00427 rebound.
The same 0% SNB rate is the Swiss leg in the note on sterling against a 0% Swiss policy rate. The Australian dollar path against the franc and the New Zealand dollar carry against the franc run to December 10. The yen cross is a separate Canadian dollar question.
Where the reciprocal method fails
Adding a four-day rebound to the September 17 high is a scaling rule, not a read of orders or of the October 28 vote. The 0.5936 target sits 0.00429 above the top of this 2026 window, and a broker quote can differ from a daily-average reciprocal. December 10 can undo a level that held on December 9. A 0% policy rate is not a floor.
"The main risk to the economic outlook for Switzerland stems from developments in the global economy. In particular, the situation in the Middle East could deteriorate further and curb global economic activity more strongly. The trade policy environment and exchange rate developments also continue to be sources of uncertainty."
— Petra Tschudin, Member of the Governing Board, Swiss National Bank (Swiss National Bank)
What would invalidate this call
The base case to 0.5936 breaks if any one of these four signals fires on or before December 9, 2026:
- A Bank of Canada FXCHFCAD fixing above 1.7241. That is the July 23, 2026 print. The reciprocal is 0.58001, stored here as 0.5800. The call is wrong below it.
- October 28 sets the overnight target below 2.25%. A cut shrinks the 225 basis point gap from the Canadian side and removes the carry Schlegel tied to the franc's decline.
- CPI-median on the daily digest prints at or below 1.5% before December 9. The latest verified median is 1.9% for September 2026. A 1.5% print would put that gauge well under the 2% target.
- The SNB announces a policy rate above 0% before December 9. No scheduled Swiss decision falls inside the window. December 10 is the following day. An earlier rise would break the 0% path in the SNB forecast.
What to watch into December 9
October 28, 2026, at 09:45 Eastern Time, brings the decision and the MPR. A hold at 2.25% leaves the base case intact. A higher target is what 0.6000 requires. November 10, at 13:30 Eastern Time, is the summary of deliberations. December 9, at 09:45 Eastern Time, is the horizon. Each FXCHFCAD fixing until then tests 1.7241 and the September 17 print of 1.6969. On December 10, at 09:30, the SNB event schedule lists the next assessment, the morning after this call expires.
TL;DR
CAD/CHF reaches 0.5936 by December 9, 2026 in the base case, 0.6000 only if the overnight target rises on October 28, and 0.58221 if the rebound is given back. Spot is 0.58648, the reciprocal of the Bank of Canada's 1.7051 Canadian dollars per franc on October 22, 2026. The gap is 225 basis points. Martin Schlegel has linked a trade-weighted franc decline of around 3% to wider differentials. The call breaks on a fixing above 1.7241, the July 23 print, a reciprocal below 0.5800, and also on an October 28 cut, a CPI-median at or below 1.5%, or an SNB rate above 0% before December 9.
FAQ
What is the CAD/CHF base case?
The base case is 0.5936 by the Bank of Canada's December 9, 2026 announcement. Spot is 0.58648, one divided by the October 22 fixing of 1.7051. Adding the 0.00427 rise from October 16 to the September 17 reciprocal of 0.58931 gives 0.59358, which rounds to 0.5936. The bull case of 0.6000 needs a higher overnight target on October 28. The bear case of 0.58221 is the October 16 reciprocal.
Why is the spot a reciprocal, not a published CAD/CHF rate?
The Bank of Canada publishes FXCHFCAD, Canadian dollars per franc, not CAD/CHF. On October 22, 2026 the average was 1.7051. One divided by 1.7051 is 0.58647587, rounded here to 0.58648. The same rule sets September 17 at 0.58931, October 16 at 0.58221 and July 23 at 0.58001. A broker price can differ from that reciprocal. This note does not adjust for the difference.
Why does the call end on December 9, not December 10?
The spot is a Bank of Canada fixing, so the horizon is that issuer's calendar. December 9, 2026 is the announcement after October 28, at 09:45 Eastern Time. The SNB's next assessment is December 10, at 09:30. Using the Swiss date would mix the two calendars. October 28 decides whether the bull case is live. The base case is judged on December 9.
What level ends the call?
A Bank of Canada fixing above 1.7241, the July 23, 2026 print. The reciprocal is 0.58001, stored as 0.5800, and the direction is below. An October 28 target under 2.25% also ends it, as does a CPI-median at or below 1.5% before December 9, or an SNB rate above 0% before that date. December 10 falls outside the horizon.
