THORChain v3.21 halts Friday as venues pause RUNE deposits
THORChain v3.21 halts at block 28,366,100 on Friday. MEXC pauses RUNE deposits from noon and prints 14:15 UTC. Height, not the clock, is authoritative.

Exchanges are putting a clock on a THORChain v3.21 network upgrade whose own release says the block height is the only time that counts. MEXC's notice says THORChain (RUNE) upgrades on October 23, 2026, at 14:15 UTC, and that RUNE deposits and withdrawals pause from 12:00 UTC. The v3.21.0 release notes, published on October 19, set the halt at block 28,366,100 and estimate 13:40 to 16:15 UTC. The 14:15 print sits inside that band. It is not the halt. The same gap showed up on Solana's Alpenglow cutover, where a printed minute and the chain rule diverged.
THORChain's account posted the same height on October 19 with a narrower estimate, about 13:40 to 15:20 UTC. At height 28,300,909, a median 6.12 seconds a block pointed to about 13:40 UTC. A later average of 6.24 to 6.26 seconds a block pointed to about 15:45 to 16:15 UTC. The build is a private binary, and operators are told not to compile it from source. THORChain's docs say validators upgrade at their own pace until a supermajority makes the new version consensus, which is meant to avoid a coordinated hard fork. Filecoin's Solstice upgrade was keyed to an epoch. MEXC says this one will not create a hard fork, unlike the hard fork IoTeX shipped with Zanzibar.
Version 3.21 restarts halted paths. It does not turn them all on at the halt block. The October 21 protocol note says Solana (SOL) trading stopped because Bifrost could not read a new transaction format, and that v3.21 restores fee sampling for it. Zcash (ZEC) trading is halted after an outbound matching fault slashed a vault. No user funds were lost. Signing stays behind HALTSIGNINGZEC until every Bifrost instance runs the new build, because transparent outbounds move to version 6 once NU6.3 is active. Limit swaps paused after underfunded orders were retried every block, until about 670 open orders carried roughly 57 MB of error data. The app layer has been halted since the exploit of Rujira's FIN contract, and v3.21 ships the fixes nodes need before a restart. Streaming yield, bond rewards paid in RUNE at each churn, ships disabled until Mimir enables it. Monero (XMR) stays gated on an undated v3.21.1.
The venue windows do not match the height
- MEXC pauses RUNE deposits and withdrawals from 12:00 UTC, leaves RUNE trading open, and says transfers resume once the upgrade is complete and stable, with no second notice.
- Bybit's October 21 notice expects the upgrade at about 14:15 UTC, or at block 228,366,100, and suspends THORChain deposits and withdrawals from 13:30 UTC. Trading is unaffected. That height is not the 28,366,100 in the release or in THORChain's post.
- BloFin said on October 21 it will suspend deposits and withdrawals for all tokens on the network at 12:00 UTC, wider than MEXC's RUNE-only pause, and that trading of those tokens will not be affected.
None of the three notices says it will wait for HALTSIGNINGZEC to clear, or for nodes to enable the app layer, before transfers reopen. A pause keyed to 228,366,100 is keyed to a block the release does not name.
Chad Barraford put the adoption question in one line on THORChain's October 1, 2026 community podcast: "I don't determine anything that happens on the protocol. I talk about things and advocate for things, but at the end of the day, it is the nodes who operate the network." The protocol recap says releases need node adoption, with two-thirds consensus for major decisions. On that recording he put the set at around 115 nodes, roughly 99 active. The September network report, published on October 6, had 103 active nodes, up from 87, and 97.66 million RUNE bonded, valued there at $77.39 million. v3.21 also reverses a historical bond slash that affected 218 bond providers.
The risk for an exchange is reopening transfers before those paths are back. SOL trading, ZEC signing, limit swaps, the Rujira app layer and streaming yield each need a further switch after the node binary is in. A September 29 report already noted that some stolen funds were routed through THORChain towards Bitcoin, which this release does not address.
If block times hold, 28,366,100 lands on Friday inside the 13:40 to 16:15 UTC estimate, so 14:15 is a point in the range, not a start gun. Streaming yield waits on Mimir, and XMR waits on v3.21.1. Noon and 13:30 UTC are custody controls, not the upgrade.
