HKEX Hires John Buckley As Head of Exchange Operations And Transformation

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has appointed John Buckley as Head of Exchange Operations and Transformation.

John Buckley will be in charge of all the exchange operations and will lead the strategic development and transformation of this part of its business.

Additionally, Mr. Buckley will aim to modernize systems and operations, embracing digital tools to enhance HKEX’s capabilities for efficiency and performance.

Joining in December 2021 as Head of Exchange Operations and Transformation as well as a member of the Group’s Management Committee, John Buckley will report to HKEX President and Chief Operating Officer, Calvin Tai.

Nicolas Aguzin, Chief Executive Officer of HKEX, said: “I am very pleased to welcome John to HKEX and to the management team. He has nearly 30 years’ experience in financial services and capital markets, and he will play a pivotal role in ensuring that HKEX is strongly placed to capture new growth opportunities.

“During his career, John has worked in New York, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong in a range of well-respected financial organisations, in a variety of roles, and I know that his broad and deep experience will be invaluable to us, as we continue to build and shape our business.”

John Buckley joins HKEX from Citadel, where he has been Chief Operating Officer for the Asia operations for the past three years. His vast career includes seven years with J.P. Morgan and several top roles including Chief Risk Officer, Asia Pacific; Chief Financial Officer, Asia Pacific; and Interim Senior Country Officer, Singapore.

HKEX has been making high-profile appointments as of late. Besides ex-JP Morgan Nicolas Aguzin, who joined as CEO in late May 2021, the exchange operator has recently appointed Winsome Ng as Head of Internal Audit and Lisa O’Connor as Head of Post Trade Change.

Mr. Aguzin joined HKEX from JP Morgan, where he was Chief Executive Officer of JP Morgan’s International Private Bank and a member of the Operating Committee for the firm’s asset and wealth management business.

Ms. Ng joined HKEX from Credit Suisse, where she was Managing Director and Chief Auditor, Asia Pacific for the past five years and was in charge of risk assessments and audit coverage of the bank’s Asia-Pacific businesses across 10 markets.

Ms. O’Connor joined HKEX from SWIFT, where she held a number of senior roles throughout nine years at the company, most recently as Head of Capital Markets Strategy, based in Hong Kong.
