Harlem Children's Zone buys Goalsetter, terms undisclosed
Harlem Children's Zone is buying Goalsetter, the youth-finance education platform. Terms were not disclosed, and the direct app accounts had already closed.

Having watched youth debit apps treat a weekly quiz as a switch on a card, the Goalsetter sale splits the lesson from the ledger. Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ), the New York anti-poverty nonprofit, announced on October 22, 2026 that it is acquiring Goalsetter and placing the platform inside Wealth Builds, its Universal Economic Mobility framework. FinTech Futures reported the deal on October 27. Financial terms were not disclosed in the primary release or in that trade report.
HCZ is buying a curriculum, which is the fact a payments desk can miss. The release names two live products. Goalsetter Classroom is a standards-aligned course for middle and high school. MoneyLingo is a mobile-first course for college-aged students and adults in work, covering saving, investing, credit, debt and everyday decisions. HCZ said it will explore lessons for younger children and a path from early childhood through adulthood, and that services to current Goalsetter clients carry on.
What Goalsetter sells
Goalsetter, the brand of Students of Wealth, Inc., used to sell the lesson on a card. A deposit account agreement effective December 18, 2023 made the company program manager for an account that Webster Bank, N.A., a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) member, established and held. Disclosures said Pathward, N.A. issued the Cashola prepaid debit Mastercard, and that Goalsetter Advisors, LLC, a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registered affiliate, gave the investment advice. Learn Before You Burn let a parent freeze the card until the week's quiz was finished.
The 2026 catalogue is the classroom and MoneyLingo, sold to schools, employers and financial institutions. Goalsetter tells banks and credit unions that 36% of users opened a new account because of something they learned on the platform, so the deposit, when one follows, sits on the partner's book. That split is the one FIS has spelled out for embedded banking, and the reason credit unions have funded embedded investing they keep on their own rails. The Council for Economic Education said on March 18, 2026 that 39 states require a personal-finance course to graduate, with new semester-long mandates covering an estimated 2.3 million students.
What changed for the accounts
The direct app is already shut, so the acquisition is a change of owner for the education clients. Goalsetter's FAQ says the company left the app to focus on education for schools, financial institutions and other organizations. As of February 13, 2026 it had closed all accounts and mailed checks to the address on file. Questions on checks, tax documents or final statements go to hello@goalsetter.co. That payout predates the October announcement by eight months, so HCZ's line that current client services carry on is about Classroom and MoneyLingo customers, a different book from a teen debit ledger inside a charity.
Capital that already sits beside the lesson
An April 2026 essay says financial education has to sit beside real assets. Wealth Builds describes a Child Capital Stack that can include baby bonds, 529 accounts, 530A accounts, scholarships, a Youth Opportunity Fund and direct transfers. College savings accounts open with a $500 deposit from HCZ and are invested with Vanguard and Ascensus. The Youth Opportunity Fund is an initial $10,000 allocation scholars can reach at age 25, after milestones, for a home, further education or a business.
HCZ, which describes a one-block start, growth to over 100 blocks in Central Harlem and work with over 70 communities, is putting Goalsetter on that stack as the education layer. Founder Tanya Van Court is identified as Chief FinTech Officer at HCZ. "Goalsetter was built on the belief that everyone should have access to the financial knowledge and tools that can shape their future and livelihood," she said. Chief executive Kwame Owusu-Kesse said the deal "strengthens our in-house capacity to build, innovate, and continuously improve outcomes."
How peer deals treated the card
Barclays Bank UK completed its purchase of GoHenry on October 1, 2026, and its third-quarter results describe the deal as money management and financial education for children and families. Goalsetter ran the reverse trade, winding the card book down and selling the teaching product, closer to Monarch taking the HMBradley team and leaving the bank brand than to a charter purchase.
The next test is whether younger-learner modules attach to accounts HCZ or a partner already holds. Early-childhood lessons and a path through adulthood fit baby bonds, 529s and the Youth Opportunity Fund more cleanly than a relaunched debit card. Classroom and MoneyLingo are what changed hands, and the October paperwork stops short of a price.
