DATA Network to retire its chain in a $30m Sui deal
Sui Foundation is investing $30 million in DATA Network and taking the largest institutional stake as the protocol retires its chain for Sui. No date is set.

DATA Network is to retire its own chain. In a post dated October 12, 2026, the Sui Foundation said it is investing $30 million and establishing the largest institutional stake, while the protocol moves onto Sui and Walrus becomes the default storage layer for applications operated by the DATA Foundation. The retirement, not the dollar figure, is what changes who runs consensus for an artificial intelligence (AI) data registry.
That reverses the appchain pattern: the registry is the asset being cited, and the chain is scheduled to go. Blast is winding down its Ethereum layer 2 because costs exceeded revenue, a related retirement with a different stated reason and the same outcome, a product giving up a dedicated chain.
What the $30 million does not specify
Sui Foundation and the DATA Foundation said DATA Network and its Trace registry are joining the Sui stack. The $30 million establishes the largest institutional stake, alongside the continuing holdings of PIP Labs and the DATA Foundation. SY Lee, chairman of Poseidon and chief executive of PIP Labs, joins the Sui Foundation as a strategic adviser. The post publishes no token quantity, no price, no lock-up on the new stake, and no split between cash and tokens.
Cointelegraph reported that a DATA Foundation spokesperson called the investment a separate part of the partnership, and said a single-use-case chain meant carrying validator, network security and infrastructure costs. The figure is a stated commitment. It is not a closed grant a holder can model.
One-to-one on paper, no date
DATA Network will run as a native protocol on Sui, and its independent chain will be retired. The $DATA token carries over one-to-one, with holder economics and governance rights at least equivalent to today. Locked and vesting positions carry over unchanged. Walrus becomes the default storage layer so Trace will be able to hold an encrypted copy of each file and regenerate a record's hash from the data itself.
There is no migration date. The existing DATA Network keeps operating until the upgrade is complete, and a timeline plus a holder transition plan are to be published first. Until then, the one-to-one carry-over is a design statement, not a conversion a custodian can book. The Sui Foundation post names no exchange, market maker or custodian.
The registry behind the stake
Trace, launched by the DATA Foundation in June 2026, records a contribution's origin, the rights attached to it, and payment to the contributor. The Sui Foundation says Trace has registered more than 250 million contributions and processes more than 3 million receipts a day on average. Applications writing to Trace include Kled, described as the largest opt-in human-data marketplace, with over 1.5 billion records being onboarded, plus Numo and Oto, which already license data to frontier AI labs and robotics companies.
Cointelegraph reported on June 25, 2026 that Story Protocol, a Layer 1 built for intellectual-property licensing, had rebranded as the DATA Foundation to focus on AI training data, with Andrea Muttoni moving from president and product chief to chief executive. Less than four months later, Sui Foundation and the DATA Foundation said that chain will be retired.
Andrea Muttoni, chief executive of the DATA Foundation, said in the October 12 post: "Joining forces with Sui now allows us to build out more of the stack, offering more than just an audit trail, like encrypted reference file storage and potentially fully verifiable TEEs for evals and fine tunings in the future." Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and chief product officer at Mysten Labs, the original contributor to Sui and Walrus, said the rights-cleared data is "already serving the world's frontier AI labs." No exchange is quoted on a listing, a conversion window or a halt.
What would make the stake operational
The next document that matters is the holder transition plan. A one-to-one map that keeps vesting intact works only if locked tokens can be reissued on Sui without a gap in which they become transferable. The announcement asserts that result and does not show the mechanism. The October 12 materials also include no independent audit of the receipt rate, and the claim that independent transactions settle in under a second describes the chain being joined, not Trace after the move.
Soda Labs raised a $3 million seed for on-chain privacy, a far smaller round. S&P Global's purchase of OpenZeppelin shows incumbents paying to rate on-chain code. Neither replaces the timeline DATA Network has said it will publish before the chain is switched off.
