Steven Van Rijswijk Named as ING’s New Chief Executive Officer

ING, one of the leading multinational banking and financial service provider has revealed the appointment of new Chief Executive Officer in its latest announcement. As per statement released by the firm, it has promoted Mr. Steven Van Rijswijk as its new Chief Executive officer set to come into effect from 1st July 2020. This move comes at the heels of announcement that Mr. Ralph Hamers – current CEO of ING is parting ways with the bank to assume role of CEO of UBS bank later this year. Mr. Steven Van Rijswijk is current serving as Chief Risk Officer and member of executive board at ING and was selected as successor of Mr. Hamers by the ING Group’s Supervisory Board. The newly named CEO has been a part of ING for 25 year now having joined the bank back in 1995.

Steven has held numerous roles across various departments of ING during his multi-decade long career and slowly made his way up the corporate ladder to his current role. He has served as part of the bank’s Mergers & Acquisitions, Equity Capital Markets, Capital Structuring and Advisory teams. He took on his first senior level leadership role in 2012 when he was promoted to the role of Global Head of Client Corporate Clients. He then took on the role of Global Head of Client Coverage for ING Wholesale Banking division in 2014 and was elected to become a member of executive board during the firm’s annual general meeting in 2017. As the global head of client coverage, he was responsible for relationship management, transaction services and corporate finance for corporate clients and financial institutions in over 40 countries.

As of August 2017, he also became Chief Risk Officer for ING Group’s Executive Board & Management Board Banking of ING Bank. The firm is currently on lookout for Mr. Steven’s successor to role of CRO once he assumes his duties as CEO. In the interim period until appointment of his successor, the role of CRO for ING Group Executive Board will be handled by Mr. Tanate Phutrakul – CFO at ING Group while day to day risk management activities will be handled by Mr. Karst Jan Wolters – current CEO at ING Wholesale banking unit and will report to Mr. Phutrakul.

Commenting on appointment of Steven as his successor, Mr. Hamers said “I congratulate Steven on his appointment. Again I want to thank the many talented and dedicated colleagues and friends I have worked with over the past 29 years”.
