UK based Challenger Bank Tandem recently revealed in its statement that it has hired veteran banker Mr. Kunal Malani as its Chief Growth Officer. While the update of his new role hit the headlines recently, he has been serving as part of the firm for nearly six months now having joined the firm back in June earlier this year. Mr. Malani is a veteran executive in banking sector having gained experience in multiple verticals of financial service industry ranging from Payments, Digital & Retail Lending space over the course of his multi-decade long career serving under several industry leading multinational banking giant across U.K., U.S., India and Middle East market regions. In his new role as Chief Growth Officer at the UK challenger bank, Mr. Malani is responsible for leading the firm’s efforts to expand its global footprint starting with its plans to establish a new office in Hong Kong.
The firm which now has a stable and steady stronghold in U.K. market region has began its plans for expanding into new market regions in order to grow its business and began its efforts to establish itself into different market region starting with Hong Kong in Asia. Mr. Malani is also in charge of leading the firm’s early adopter program which it has initiated in Hong Kong ahead of its plans for official launch towards end of this year. The firm also has plans for expansion into other new markets as part of its growth agenda alongside plans for boosting its product offerings in UK market region which are set to take place starting next year set to be led by newly appointed head of growth. Prior to taking up his new role with UK challenger bank, he served as member of another UK based bank HSBC – a multinational banking and financial service provider for five and a half years.
During his term at HSBC, he served at the firm regional Head of Retail Banking Products for MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region and was responsible for all of the bank’s retail products and segments in the region including Turkey. As regional head of retail banking products he was in-charge of directly leading a team of 65 individuals and accountable for revenue of more than US$ 900 Million. Some of his other notable roles include – Commercial Director of Global Lending & Liability Products at Barclays, Director at GE, Head of Cross Sales at Capital One and product manager at Citi bank. Speaking about his new role with UK Challenger Bank, Mr. Malani said, “I am extremely excited to be leading Tandem’s international expansion plans as well as the growth agenda we have here at home. We have hit the ground running with Hong Kong and done so at a great time as local consumers are currently massively underserved when it comes to digital banking”.
