LeBron James and Crypto.com agree to bring blockchain education to at-risk students

“Blockchain technology is revolutionizing our economy, sports and entertainment, the art world, and how we engage with one another. I want to ensure that communities like the one I come from are not left behind.”

LeBron James, the NBA star playing for the L.A. Lakers, and his foundation have partnered with Crypto.com in order to educate Akron students on how digital assets work and their impact on their future lives, which includes potential career paths for many.

“It’s been amazing to see how many doors we’ve been able to open for my I Promise students and their families through the work we do with our partners and what we’re building with House Three Thirty. It’s important to me that we keep opening those doors – especially when it comes to Web3 and our digital future”, a spokesperson for LeBron James told the Beacon Journal.

“I’m still learning as everything keeps evolving, and now with Crypto.com, I want to make sure my kids and families are part of that as well”, he added about the LeBron James Family Foundation’s I Promise program in Akron, Ohio.

Crypto.com will help develop Web3-specific programming, and will also financially support the foundation as part of a multi-year agreement that aims to keep academically at-risk students on the path to not only a high school diploma but also a college degree as well as learn about blockchain from experts provided by Crypto.com.

“Blockchain technology is revolutionizing our economy, sports and entertainment, the art world, and how we engage with one another. I want to ensure that communities like the one I come from are not left behind. Crypto.com and I are aligned on the need to educate and support my community with the information and tools they need for inclusion. I’m looking forward to working with them to bring these opportunities to my community”, LeBron James said in a statement.

Crypto.com’s partnership with LeBron James and his foundation follows a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in which the firm acquired the naming rights for the home arena.

Kris Marszalek, co-founder and CEO of Crypto.com, said: “We couldn’t be more proud to join LJFF in providing opportunities to increase educational and workforce development while delivering the tools and access that will empower the next generation to build a better and more inclusive future.”

A security breach last week saw $35 million stolen from 500 user accounts, said the CEO of the Singapore-based crypto exchange. He did not reveal how the hack occurred and the exact method the hackers used remains unclear.

The exchange operator “very quickly stopped” unauthorized withdrawals, restored its funding services within 14 hours, and is prepared to share information on the theft if regulators do inquire.

Crypto.com, which boasts Hollywood superstar Matt Damon as the face of the exchange, has yet to receive any communication from regulators following the breach. But Marszalek said they are prepared to share information on the theft if regulators do inquire.

All affected customers were fully reimbursed, the firm stated. “Following the 17th of Jan security incident, we are sharing our findings, together with enhancements we’ve made to our security infrastructure and the introduction of the Worldwide Account Protection Program.”
